Experienced and adaptable professional with a science, engineering and business background. Broad
experience base includes engineering, site environmental program management, EHS auditing and
compliance assurance, training and communications, business and site support work and corporate
program building and leadership assignments in the chemical, pharmaceutical and seed businesses.
Technical expertise in water, wastes and air permitting and technical support, waste management
outsourcing and bid projects, treatment technology and sampling/analysis support, as well as Health and
Safety. Proven success has been achieved by the use of effective interpersonal skills and team building as
a complement to the technical base.
CAREER
STRAIGHT BEAM LLC 2010 to present
A new business started to provide auditing and teaching services to businesses and institutions. Current
activities include the following:
Performed site support, pollution prevention and energy audits, and air permitting coaching,
waste recycling and storm water development support through Michigan Retired Engineers
Technical Assistance Program.
Provide Energy Assessments to Michigan organizations & companies through Rebuild
Michigan program.
Developed and taught a graduate level class (Sustainability for Engineers) at WMU; Taught
Energy Management and Environmental Engineering for Fall 2013.
Taught waste water operators material for their licensing exams (for a client) and developed
water industry managerial classes for MRWA. Four separate classes developed to date and
given several times per year.
Provided plant shutdown/turnaround EHS support for major manufacturer in SW Michigan.

Pfizer is a major research and pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Supported Water Aid Uganda on a 25 week assignment. Developed Urban Intervention strategy for
country program.
Director Waste and Water Networks 2003 - 2010
Provided technical and management leadership in waste and water areas for entire company.
Regional Waste Disposal Services Bid Projects. Co-led US/PR program and realized 5
million USD savings. Oversaw implementation in Ireland to realize 1 million USD savings.
Resolved potential for similar programs in Italy, UK and Germany.
Waste Minimization program. Developed the solvent footprint metric for use by each site,
using a team of experts from operations. Robust metric created that used existing data and
was less susceptible to volume fluctuations etc.
Cost of Water Use Assessment. Created the conceptual framework for the assessing the true
cost of water at Pfizer sites. Led team that developed usable tool.
Waste Vendor Audit program. Managed annual review of 50+ sites. Applied business
rationale to reduce the number of on-site reviews needed by 60% .
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Support. Provided routine site operations support.
Examples – 2008 site visit to Rewari India to develop project to upgrade treatment plant.
Led 2/3 teleconference peer reviews per year.
US Waste Training. Introduced the Web cast training process, cutting costs from 50 people
traveling to one location to use of webinar.
Pioneered the use of Right First Time (RFT)/Six Sigma techniques for wastewater
management in Pfizer. Took RFT concepts and applied them to wastewater area. Held
training sessions in PR and Europe. Tool quickly gained universal acceptance.
Managed the technical and political issues for Pharmaceutical ingredient compound
sampling and analysis. Led consultations with affected sites and gained concurrence for the
work. Four compounds and four sites - $200k spend. Project was delivered $50,000 under
budget.

Provided technical, compliance and management leadership in waste and water areas for entire
company
Area liaison for numerous operating plants in US/PR, Europe, Latin America and Asia
regions.
Led the Waste Bid project that identified 1 million USD savings.
Environment, Safety and Health Manager Monsanto Company 1997 to 2000
Assured cultural assimilation and full compliance of newly acquired seed sites and existing
manufacturing operations. Provided Safety and Health support work to many of these
locations.

HS auditing process developed for new seed and other sites.
