I went to schools and met with teachers to explain the benefits of becoming a union member. If they were
members I would give them out new information about what is going on in the organization and if they were
not I would give them information on how to become a member. I would also help members file grievances
and sit in on meetings with them to come up with a solution. I have been interim office manager and in this
position I did correspondence to members and handled the bookkeeping through quick-books when I was not
in schools. I answered phones and handled the situation if I could if I could not I would route them to the proper
department. I interviewed members to secure needed technical information and obtain and clarify relevant
facts involving benefit problems related to the insurance and retirement. I had to explain legal provisions,
policies and regulations involving different criteria for benefits. I had to respond to specific procedural and
technical inquiries from members and potential members. I had to make phone call to get pertinent information
from members about different programs that are beneficial to them. I had to continuously explain different
laws and regulations instituted by the state of Alabama that could affect members and potential members.
I had to interpret state laws and regulations covering benefits concerning teachers seeking retirement, and
retirees seeking different information. I have to explain legal provisions, regulations and information to the
general public and provide assistance to the public on rights, benefits under a body of law. I had to use
databases in order to answer customer questions and perform follow-up action on customer/client accounts.
I operated a personal computer daily as a part of the job. I had to use different applications such as: Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access to put the information into readily accessible files and documents
that could be used for information purposes. I would use the information that was gained to create, edit,
print, retrieve, and manipulate files. I researched issues and make sound decisions within the parameters
of guidelines that fall within the parameters outlined by the Birmingham American Federation of Teachers. I
had to listen to information provided by individuals and identify the nature and purpose of the inquiry. I would
