Medical Relief Mission/ Out-Patient Clinic Project. Tunja, Boyaca, Colombia.
Provided direct medical care and healthcare education to underserved, rural populations. Due to the
overwhelming need for healthcare in this community I am currently working on co-founding a small clinic for
outpatient care that will be used to visiting physicians doing medical relief work and will collaborate with local
physicians with the goal of providing continuity of care. Additional plans are in effect to develop a project in
cooperation with UNIBOYACA Medical School, to provide education and education to the future local
doctors.

RESEARCH RELATED EXPERIENCE
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
08/04-12/06
Children’s Memorial Hospital Research Center (CMRC), Department of Human Genetics Chicago, IL.
Managed project for the development a mouse model with genotype and phenotype expression of genes
involved in Rett’s Syndrome and Angelman’s Syndrome. The model will be utilized in protocols for
developing genetic modulators for gene expression that could be implemented in therapies to treat or cure
patients with the aforementioned syndromes. Techniques utilized in my project include planning and
assembling plasmid vectors to integrate into the host genome to induce long or short-term gene expression to
increase or decrease protein production in cell culture models. Electroporation and lipofection of cells with
vectors of interest was performed to develop stable cell lines with induced protein expression. To use SiRNA
for candidate gene induction or repression The
effects of modification in expression of Ube3a,
Gabrb3 and Atp10c candidate genes were studied in cell lines by using different induction modulators such as
deoxycycline, G418, neomycin, Zeozin, etc..
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
06/03-08/03
Summer Research Opportunity Scholarship for Minorities.
I was awarded a scholarship and stipend ($3000 plus expenses) based on my academic achievements. The SROP has
several components: First and the most rewarding is the opportunity to work one on one with a University of Illinois
at Chicago (UIC) faculty mentor on a research project. The second component was campus based weekly activities
including workshops, seminars, and symposiums involving all the UIC SROP participants. The third component was
the 2004 CIC/SROP National Conference, which was held from July 9-11, 2004 at the University of Iowa. This
conference included over 500 student participants from the fifteen member CIC institutions, presenting their research
projects and experiences from the program.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT

University of Illinois at Chicago, School Of Medicine, Department of Hematology/Oncology, Division of Flow
Cytometry, Chicago, IL.
Managed project for the development of a screening test for early detection of breast cancer based on labeling cell
markers and cytology. Performed tissue culture and maintenance of breast cancer cell lines, cell staining and
karyotyping. Utilized proteomic techniques involving Southern and western blots and various methods of protein
preparation as well as isolation and preparation of DNA and RNA from breast cancer cell lines. Developed protocols
for flow cytometers to assess and sort dendritic cell lines with antibodies (CD34, IgG1, PI, etc.) Flow cytometers
utilized: FACSCaliburk (Becton Dickinson, Heidelberg, Germany), FACStar Plus, and Vantage SE (Becton
Dickinson). Prepared a mixed leukocyte reaction with Carboxin fluoreacetate in tissue samples of leukemia patient for
cell count.

Carried out medium preparation and cultures for bacteria (Escherichia coli). Performed protein extraction from
E. Coli. Prepared cleared Lysate buffer under natural conditions as well as other buffers such as: PBS,
lyzome® for lysine E. coli, etc. Executed sonication procedures in E. coli, followed by centrifugation and
filtration of supernatant. Performed batch purification of protein of interest (Glutathione Sepharose 4 Fast
Flow) and examined protein content by SDS-PAGE and western blotting.
