The course comprised ten days of intensive training in microbiology and
molecular microbial ecology. Taught hands-on research focused on microbes
in sponges although the principles and skills covered are generally
applicable in microbiology. I isolated microbes from sponges, identified
isolates by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing, extracted total DNA from
sponges and performed PCR to amplify microbial genes. A major focus was
the detection of signaling compounds from microbes. Microscopy and
fluorescence in situ hybridization were also covered.
