Career History
Present - Staff Nurse. Oakwood Community Hospital.
A 24 bedded unit but currently only is using 20 beds. The patients on the
unit come from referrals from doctors, Specialist Nurses and from Staff
nurses at the Rotherham Hospital or from District Nurses and GP's in the
community. Examples of the type of patients we have are Heart failure
patients needing care, patients with cellulitis or wound infections needing
IV antibiotics, detoxing alcoholics, surgical ophthalmic patients requiring
frequent eye drops and who are unable to do them for themselves. We have
orthopaedic patients requiring a bit of physiotherapy and OT, patients
needing IV fluids due to dehydration. We also take palliative patients who
come in for pain relief and to get their pain under control so they can go
and be pain free at home. The unit is ward led; we have a Manager who is a
Nurse prescriber and patients are assessed daily by the ward manager and
Staff Nurse caring for them.
2010 to Sept 2012- Staff Nurse. Skilled Nursing Unit at Rotherham
Hospital.
The ward cared for Surgical, Elderly and Medical patients who have plans of
care set up by Doctors; we then carry out that plan of care thus reducing
the need for Doctors as much. It was a predominantly Nurse led unit and was
one of the first in the country, staff were chosen from a variety of
Nursing settings to give a good skill mix; sadly it shut due to cutbacks
but all staff moved to Oakwood Community Hospital.
2007 - 2010. Cancer Information and Support Nurse. Cancer Information and
Support Centre, Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield.
I offered emotional support for Patients and their families with Cancer.
The centre offered financial advice and as a Staff Nurse I ran a variety of
groups for example the Brain tumour group and there was a weekly group
where patients who were at varying stages of their Cancer journey met, we
talked as a group about for example the importance of diet, tiredness and
fatigue etc... Another role was to do talks to people in the Health
profession or groups wanting to support the centre and explaining the role
of the centre.
2004 - 2007. Chemotherapy Staff Nurse. Chemotherapy suite, Weston Park
Hospital, Sheffield.
This involved assessing implementing and evaluating a plan of care for each
patient undergoing Chemotherapy. A big part of this role was to give
emotional support to patients and families. I cannulated the patients,
gave the chemotherapy and arranged blood tests required and future
appointments for that patient. In the chemotherapy suite there was a room
where patients who had adverse reactions post chemotherapy so we took
bloods, assessed them and then referred if required onto the doctors. Once
or twice a week I did telephone triage where I answered all the
worries/concerns of patients perhaps coming for their first chemotherapy,
patients having chemotherapy and post chemotherapy then referred if
necessary onto the appropriate person be it a GP, our doctors or their
Nurse specialist.
