operations of the JHU Physics and Astronomy Machine Shop, acting as senior instrument
designer and senior machinist supporting JHU research, inst ructional departments within
J HU, and their affiliates.
During which I designed and fabricated state of the art instruments, mechanisms, and
tested equipment for research or instructional purposes in the area of physics and
astronomy.
Daily responsibilities:
• Ordering materials
• constructing schematics
• teaching/training students about safe and effective use of shop equipment and assisting
w ith their educational endeavors
• collaborating with-in multi-disciplinary departments
• Calibrating, testing equipment and assisting researchers conceptualize their
i nstrumentation concepts through wri t ten and verbal implementation
• maintaining time and materials logs and budgets
• performing maintenance on machine shop equipment
• discussing shop work orders in an effort to meet design and repair needs in the most
efficient and cost effective way
