Addendum, Highlights of design accomplishments:
(In reverse chronological order)
1. Designed embedded firmware and hardware for a live fire target hit
detection assembly using an automotive engine knock sensor as the hit
sensing device. This sensor assembly was mounted on a moving target
and had user selectable sensitivity while rejecting vibration due to
external sources such as debris and track vibration.
2. Designed embedded firmware and hardware for a gunshot discriminator
that detected (with a piezo disk) the impulse of a close gunshot and
reported it with a time stamp, in real time, via USB 2.0 to a Windows
machine.
3. Engineered a user interface for an infusion pump, in the medical
industry. The interface consisted of GUI firmware (written in C with
CPEG). The hardware contained a built in touch screen and LCD
graphical display connected to a ColdFire processor.
4. Designed a TCP/IP controlled 1:1 antenna protection switch to a
customer's custom requirements. The unit functioned as a TCP/IP
remote appliance. Remote control was achieved via a web browser
connection to this unit's internal HTML server. The unit's firmware
was written in "Dynamic C". The hardware consisted of a custom PCB
with a Rabbit 3000 microcontroller module stacked on top.
5. Managed the successful upgrade (and bug fix) to an existing (no longer
supported) Sun Solaris based Monitor and Control (M&C) System located
in Saudi Arabia.
6. Designed a complete M&C (Monitor and Control) System for DataPath,
Inc., a major client. The M&C system consists of two types of
computers. One computer, the "Data Collection Unit" (DCU), resides in
the equipment shelter and interfaces to all remotely controllable
Earth Station Equipment. The second type of computer, the "Command
Console", resides at a remote location and provides a user interface
between the operator and the Earth Station's equipment. The software
for the Console was written in Visual Basic Pro V5.0/V6.0 and runs
under either the Windows 98 or Windows 2000 operating system. This
provides for a contemporary GUI system, with the limited reliability
and real time capabilities that any Windows based product can offer.
The software for the Data Collection Unit was written in Borland C and
initializes under a DOS operating system. This provides for complete
system reliability and lightning fast real time response between the
M&C system and earth station equipment. All serial device drivers
reside on the DCU.
7. Supervised and Co-authored a ported version of the existing "full
blown" Command Console code to a "scaled down" Pocket PC based
platform using AppForge Mobile VB.
8. Wrote numerous serial device drivers including SA BUS, MODBUS, Miteq
Converters, LNR Converters, Miteq LNAs, EF Data Modems, Radyne Modems,
MCL HPAs, Davis Weather Stations, etc.
9. Designed a front panel interface for a piece of optical test equipment
while contracting for ILX Lightwave. The hardware was based upon the
PC/104 bus standard. It utilized a standard PC/104 CPU card and a
custom (component level) designed front panel interface card to
interface to the keypad, a quadrature encoder (digital POT), power
supplies, as well as other facets of the test. Chose a software
platform and initiated the software development for the front panel's
firmware as well as wrote numerous low-level interface routines to the
custom hardware.
10. Wrote a BIOS in C for a MIPS microprocessor and Compact PCI bus based
IP router/bridge product while at Computone Corporation. The BIOS
automatically initialized base addresses and ranges for memory and I/O
cards attached to the compact PCI bus and provided this information to
the other software modules. This BIOS interfaced to the PCI cards via
a Galileo PCI bridge IC.
11. Developed an inexpensive 921.6Kbps, ISA "Plug 'n' Play" High Speed
Serial Card for Computone Corporation. I designed the hardware as
well as wrote factory manufacturing and test software for the card. I
took the card through FCC Class B certification and Full CE Mark
verification.
12. Designed a microprocessor based camera controller (both hardware and
firmware) for Eagle Eye's in police car camera system. This device
was 8051 family based. The software was written in C.
13. Developed a two rack-unit high, quad 1:1 (U/C, D/C, HPA, and LNA)
80C186EB microprocessor based protection switch for COMSAT RSI. This
model SRU 3420 switch had dual power supplies and a graphic LC
Display. Each 1:1 system was based around a separate (and simple)
plug in interface card. The chassis would automatically detect the
installation of these cards and reconfigure its graphic display and
menu system accordingly.
14. Developed a dual 1:N up/down converter 80C186EB microprocessor based
protection switch for COMSAT RSI. This model CRU 3700 switch design
was based around plug in RF/IF switch modules to allow customer
upgradeable 1:N configurations. The protection switch implemented a
talk through design where the protection switch was wired between the
customer M&C and the converters; however, the protection switch
appeared to be multi-dropped along with the converters as another
device on the same SA (serial) bus. (This provided for independent
polling of the converters from the protection switch and from the host
M&C system.)
15. As contract labor, designed a microprocessor-based controller (both
hardware and firmware) for CCA's DigiCiter (FM broadcast exciter).
This device was 8051 family based. The software was written in C, and
the controller interfaced to a Noritake VF Display.
16. Designed an 80C186EB/80C187 based microprocessor board that was
(hardware interface) backward compatible with a previously vendor
supplied 8051 based microprocessor board. This new board was designed
to a software developer's microprocessor/performance specifications to
run an OPTRACK (optimized step track) algorithm for COMSAT RSI's 4056
Antenna Control Unit.
17. Designed an operator interface console for FATS (Firearms Training
Systems) simulator. This device was 68HC11 based.
18. Wrote several serial device drivers, in C, to interface between
Radiations Systems' M&C System and Fairchild's SM2900 satellite MODEM,
and the PCD (Precision Controls Division of Radiation Systems) Model
100 Antenna Control Unit.
19. Designed a one rack unit high, dual 1:1 LNA protection switch with
self calibrating current detect for LNA's under power, while at IDB
Systems. This project required extensive component level analog
design (including a dual linear power supply) as well as digital
circuit design.

21. Designed a V40 based 1:4 HPA protection switch for IDB Systems.
22. Designed a V40 microprocessor based controller for monitor and control
of satellite earth station equipment while at IDB Systems. This
project required modification of existing controller software (C and

parallel I/O, and serial interface boards.
23. Independently designed a 20 MHz, 16 channel, hand held logic analyzer
utilizing GAL's, LC Display, and a 80C31 microcontroller. Control
software was written in 8051 assembly language. GAL's were designed
using PALASM.

turn on, while at IDB Systems. This project included circuit board
layout and packaging as well as circuit design.

spectrum analyzer and microcontroller was accomplished with IEEE-488
interface bus.
31. Wrote telephone modem dial out software for Hayes compatible modem on
IDB's control system. The software (written in C) would detect
relevant status changes, dial out, and report the changes to a main
