Role : Junior Mainframes Developer

Description: Timken LPWS Migration, The Timken Company is a leading global

manufacturer of highly engineered bearings and alloy steels and a provider

of related products and services with operations in 27 countries.

Timken had a mainframe based LPWS (Label Packaging and Work copy)

application. This was a legacy application developed several years back

using Mantis language and Supra database. Manufacturing units all over the

world used this application for generating labels and packaging

instructions. Timken wanted to re-engineer LPWS application to web

environment with mainframe DB2 as the database. The project is divided into

two phases. The first phase involved changing every mainframe routine to

access DB2 instead of Supra database. The second phase was the development

on web pages, which communicate with mainframe database

The project involved extensive use of IBM MQ architecture. This was done in

order to use the routines existing on the mainframe environment. The

alternative would have been to re-engineer the mainframe routines on the

web environment (not a very cost-effective solution). User security was

retained in CICS system. Existing mainframe print routines were called from

the web environment. This involved developing mainframe interface in order

to communicate with the existing mainframe routines.

Supra

. Preparing the program specification to re-engineering Mantis programs to

IBM MQ Series

. Mapping the fields from SUPRA to DB2

. Writing the new programs to download the data to flat files.

. Involved in Data clean up

. Preparation of unit test cases

. Unit testing and System testing

. Peer review of the code changes and unit test cases

. Coordinating the offshore team to onsite team

from the old MIS system (IMS database) and does not have all the

functionality of the old IMS system. Data is currently copied back and

forth between new GSS database in DB2 and old MIS database in IMS.

Sandvik wanted to convert the programs from old MIS system to DB2 based GSS

system and also to incorporate MIS features into GSS. This involved

changing the programs to access DB2 database (GSS system) instead of IMS

database. It also involved creation of new fields on DB2 database for non-

existent fields & migration of data from old MIS system to DB2.

Responsibilities:

. Analyses of the existing Cobol IMSDB programs and convert the IMSDB calls

to DB2 calls.
