Introduction
Though working as a patient care technician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, I was able to explore the practice of medicine and figure out that I wanted something collaborative that emphasized team practice and allowed me to spend abundant time with patients. While there, I worked on projects to improve communication and efficiency on my floor which provided me an opportunity to take on a leadership role and develop my problem-solving skills. Once I decided that physician assistant was the right career for me, I had been out of college for more than five years and my courses would no longer qualify as prerequisites by most PA programs. Rather than being discouraged, I saw this as a chance to refresh and update my knowledge. I began tutoring at St. Louis Community College to earn money to help pay for my courses and books, but soon discovered a love of teaching. The moment something clicked in a student’s mind and they began understanding a concept filled me with joy. I had to leave this position when I had to move on to University of Missouri at St. Louis to complete my prerequisites, but I looked forward to patient education as part of my future. During my physician assistant education, I became invested in improving patient health literacy, emphasizing preventive care, and working with underserved populations. I aspire to focus on these areas in my future career through working in community education, researching promising new treatments, being an advocate for my patients, and cooperating with a team to provide the best possible care.
