A SHORT BIO

Lee Murphy’s most recent plays are Ophelia’s Mum and Betty, The Oracle of Tarzana. Her other plays include Catch A Falling Star, Monkey Grass, and Sirens of Seduction. Ms. Murphy was Playwright-In-Residence at The Victory Theater in Burbank, where most of her plays premiered. Catch A Falling Star won the L. A. Theater Ovation Award for Best Writing for a Premiere Play, as well as other awards, and is published by Samuel French. It has been produced around the country. Monkey Grass received N.A.A.C.P. awards and Drama-Logue awards. Ms. Murphy has written adaptations of Moliere’s Tartuffe and Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. Recently, she co-created the PBS children’s animated TV show, Hey, Wordy! Ms. Murphy has acted in film, television and several seasons at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, where she won three acting awards and the First Lillie Mae Barr Award for Outstanding Debut Performance (the dancer in Feiffer’s People). She was in the first Old Globe Educational Shakespeare tour (The Taming of the Shrew). She’s performed in her own plays and musical/comedy reviews (FOURPLAY with Julie Kavner, David Leisure, and Don Sparks, and These Three and ME!). She has a B.A. in Telecommunications/TV/Film from the University of Houston, with graduate studies in film at San Diego State University. She taught writing and performing of one-person plays at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood and is currently on the selection panel for the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival. She’s a member of Dramatists Guild, SAG/AFTRA, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
