Histology Technician

Perform tissue embedding following established procedures.

Perform routine cutting of paraffin blocks on a rotary microtome.

Prepare reagents following established procedures.

Accession and log specimens, maintain documentation of workload volume, quality control data

and all appropriate records as required by the department, company and various regulatory

agencies.

Maintain block files. Store specimens for future retrieval if necessary.

Match slides and reports to ensure correct information is reported.

Stain, coverslip and label slides (automated and manual). Perform special staining procedures

offered in the histology laboratory (automated and manual).

Research, troubleshoot and resolve inquiries or problems within the laboratory. Assist less

experienced employees in researching, resolving and documenting problems. Other duties as

required by the department

2011 - 2018 UNC Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center Chapel Hill, NC Histologist

Mohs Histology including embedding, cutting, microtonomy, H&E staining, Immuno hand stains, and cover slipping. Prepare fresh tissue by embedding on to the slide, needs to freeze for 2 to 3 minutes and than i embedded to a cold chuck. Next I start to cut the frozen tissue on the Cryostat. From there it is baked for 5 minutes and than it is stained on the Leica linear stainer. Last every case gets its documentation to be read by the surgeons.

Process tissue including embedding, cutting, microtonomy, H&E staining, special stains, immunohistochemical staining and cover slipping. First thing in the morning I take out the small biopsies that’s on the VIP tissue processor consisting of skins, prostates, and gi’s. Than I take the biopsies to my embedding station by first scanning the block on copath and than i embedd the tissue. Next I take the biopsies I embedded to my cutting station by first scanning the block on copath, shaving the blocks and cutting. Next I bake the slides for 20 minutes, than I separate the slides for h&e, special and immuno staining. The h&e staining is performed on the leica auto stainner/coverslipper. The special and immuno staining goes on the Dako artsain auto stainner. After the staining is done we match the slides with the blocks put them on slide folders with its documentation to be read by the pathologist.
