CFD Research Work in University of Cincinnati (Dec 2015 - present)

Flow investigation, design exploration and acoustic study of high geometry nozzles for jet engines.

Tools used: HPC Resources from Ohio Supercomputer, Secure Shell client, SolidWorks and Star CCM+.

Description: A super-sonic high aspect-ratio nozzle with experimental results had to be validated.

A jet flow volume and an acoustic region was prepared in SolidWorks. Reduction in domain size for substantial reduction in file size (by over 50%) and computational time was taken as a requirement.

Mesh generation involved estimating cell type and size requirements for different regions. Effects of structured vs un-structured was proven with substantial accuracy in solution and lower dissipation losses.

Physical models were scrutinized to best accommodate practical demands on the solution and the time it would take to reach the same. Computational time was reduced by over 33% in most cases.

Steady state RANS was used as a precursor to initiate DES/LES. And FW-H method was used to obtain pressure variations in the domain. Fast Fourier transformations (FFT) then provided the Sound Pressure Levels for validation of the experimental results obtained in the Gas Dynamics and Propulsion Laboratory.

HPC resources were used at 90% efficiency.

Successfully completed a 12-week rigorous project to reduce variability and error in a mechanical launching system by demonstrating Continuous Improvement (DMAIC cycle). Improved efficiency by 90%.
