As general manager it was necessary to oversee all duties performed by all employees and to insure a competent and efficient organization.

Initially hired as an estimator. This position required material take offs and pricing for more than 1,400 single family homes per year. After holding this position for four months a promotion to estimating manager was accepted. Management responsibilities throughout my career with Evans Products consisted of hiring and training of personnel for estimating, order processing, construction, material scheduling, customer service, architectural and mechanical drafting, technical services, and material control departments. These responsibilities were to support the sales, design and construction of us to 2,200 homes per year in all states east of the Mississippi River.

These departments were located and managed in many different regions: Ohio, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Indiana, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Personal relocations to these areas were necessary to initiate set-up operations at new sales and production facilities.

Areas of responsibility included development of annual budgets, forecasts, pricing books for regional sales force, construction manuals, “How to do” finish manuals for customer use, and the implementation of an “on line” computer program to increase productivity. As chairman of the Special Plan Review Committee and a member of the Product Selection Committee, it was vital to be familiar with new trends in the building industry.
