Preceptor to new hire graduate nurses. I help develop the new graduate nurse skills, and nursing process for a period of three months. I work directly with the graduate nurse checking all medications, ensuring the new graduate nurse delivers safe and effective patient care, as well as oversee all documentation, assessments and help teach the graduate nurse effective time management.
Relief charge nurse on my unit. I act as charge nurse when the assistant nurse manager is unable to work. As relief charge I manage a unit with 75 beds, 15 registered nurses, a paramedic and 4 patient care technicians. I also manage our sister unit discharge care center which sees a multitude of patients coming in for antibiotic treatments, blood transfusions and injections.
The clinical transition unit receives a variety of patients from the ED waiting to transition to their rooms on a floor, 23-72 hour observation patients, and a discharge care unit that serves to treat a variety of patient’s needs.
We must have knowledge of all body systems, know and interpret cardiac rhythm strips, TIA observation patients, understand how to complete a detailed Neuro assessment, blood transfusions, port access and picc line access/dressing changes, blood transfusions, understand how to prioritize our care and quickly do what needs to be done for a variety of patients before they are transferred to their unit. Start IV's. we do all of our own lab draws, understand and complete knowledge of Cerner computer system. Because our unit serves as an overflow of the ED we see every type of patient and we are not limited to one body system focus, we must understand a multitude of disease processes and how to assess our patients and note any slight changes that occur.
