NURSING Duties and Responsibilities:

In Labour room

Coordinate and manage patients’ care & recovery in consultation with other healthcare members. Prepare timely and accurate patient-records, recovery charts etc;

Manage patients’ birth expectations, and options, in conjunction with their medical needs: o Offer relaxation techniques during labour, and assist with painless (epidural ) labour; o Monitor dilatation, and foetal heart rate for abnormalities; o Assist in normal and abnormal deliveries like twins, triplets, instrumental deliveries etc; o Assist the doctor in inducing labour by administering Oxytocin or Cytotec; o Initiate appropriate intervention measures in emergencies situations.

In Labour room - Operation Theatre room:

Attended to emergency Obstetrics and Gynaecology surgeries, like caesarean, myomectomy, hysterotomy, cervical encirclage, dilation and curettage, suction evacuation etc;

As scrub nurse, I worked closely with the surgeon(s) within the sterile field, passing instruments, sponges, and other items needed during surgery;

As circulating nurse, I worked outside the sterile field within the Operation Theatre by keenly observing the surgical team and assist them as required;

Communicate continuously with operating team and other medical staff;

Monitor patient for any negative signs during surgeries. In Labour room - Post-operative (Intensive) Care Unit:

Provide constant care to patients immediately following surgery;

Implement control use of sedations and high risk medications in accordance with hospital policies; and adhere to all health and safety policies at all times;

Administer blood and blood products as per doctor’s instructions;

Administer medications via intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, sublingual, per vaginal, per rectal, and oral route, as and when necessary;

Evaluate the incision site to ensure that the sutures are holding and the wounds are healing;

Demonstrate ability to perform assessment of drains and catheters. SPECIALISED Duties & Responsibilities

Perform complex procedures; such as, IV cannula insertions, urinary catheter insertions, stem cell collections and neonatal resuscitations;

Assist with the management of PPH (postpartum haemorrhage), shoulder dystocias, eclampsias, preeclampsias, gestational diabetes, abortions, etc;

Conducted quality assurance audits, in accordance to NABH requirements (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers).

***LOURDES HOPITAL is a large Christian missionary hospital management by the Catholic Archdiocese in Ernakulam, South India. It was established in 1965 and it is one of the oldest hospitals in the region. It now employs 200 doctors and 1500 nursing professionals. The Catholic nuns manage the day-to-day running of the hospital to a very high standard and ethos. Lourdes Hospital is 600 bed NABH accredited (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) hospital with super specialty departments, such as:

Cardiology& Cardiothoracic Surgery;

Anaesthesiology;

Neurology, Neurosurgery,

ENT;

Obstetrics & Gynaecology,

Paediatrics& neonatology,

Vascular Surgery;

Bariatric Surgery& Plastic Surgery;

Lourdes Hospital is equipped with 16 suite Operation Theatres, Cath Lab, MRI Scan, and Nuclear Imaging etc.

During my 5 years with Lourdes Hospital, I had the opportunity to work in various areas within its Maternity Complex.

The Maternity complex has 22 beds and its own Operating Theatre, with well-equipped Labour Room, Birthing Suite, Operating Theatre, Pre-Eclampsia Unit, Observation Room, and Post- operative Unit.

Other than routine patient-care involving antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum aspects of normal labour, I was took care of high-risk patients with IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction), eclampsia, gestational diabetes, antepartum haemorrhage, cardiac disease complicating pregnancy, seizure disorder, multiple pregnancies, premature labour and instrumental deliveries. I was actively part of Lourdes Hospital’s 100-150 deliveries per month, including caesarean and other complex deliveries.

I have assisted in the Operating Theatre as scrub, circulating and recovery nurse, and been part of various surgeries, like, lower-segment caesarean section, suction evacuation, cervical encirclage and dilation and curettage etc.

I also provided patients close-care (intensive care) immediately after surgery like dilation and curettage, suction evacuation, cervical encirclage, lower segment caesarean section, open and laparoscopic hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy, laparoscopic & open myomectomies. Hyde S. Rodrigues Page 6
