Contract Network Engineer

Contracted to SIS to engineer and architect new setups in the existing data center in Lexington, KY. This is a multi-tenant environment that does “cloud” hosting for clients using the x86, IBM AS400 (iSeries), and IBM RS6000 (pSeries). Responsibilities included running/maintaining/replacing the firewalls (Juniper, Cisco ASA, Fortinet (physical and virtual), Layer 3 switch architecture (Cisco and Brocade) and terminating IPsec VPN’s into the virtual infrastructure for each customer island.

Supported Fortinet Fortigate Firewalls in a number of capacities. In the internal infrastructure the physical hardware consisted of a 2 pair of Fortigate 1000s in a high-availability configuration in one data center and 2 pair of Fortigate 800s in a high-availability for the other data center. Behind each of these sets was the virtual multi-tenant environments. The responsibilities were to create Fortigate VM firewalls when bringing up new customer islands and managing the firewall rule bases dependent on each customers needs balanced with the security of the entire environment. The Fortigate VM models were VM60c, VM00, 01, 02, 04, or 08s dependent on the size and throughput needed for that specific customers needs. As part of the sales engineer role the design, installation, and for certain customers hosted management of their on premises network and security equipment including the Fortinet firewalls. Depending on the customers needs these ranged from the Fortigate 60c, FortiWifi 60c, VM60c, Foritgate 50B, Fortigate 80c for the small offices to the FortiGate 90D, FortiGate 200 series, FortiGate 300 series, FortiGate 600 series for the medium to larger sized offices.

I am also responsible for architecting and evaluating the network equipment for the new small to medium size office offerings. Including the classic Cisco routers, switches and the Cisco Meraki line of products.
