Technologist at heart - my ** years of experience in the tech industry has evolved from Unix system administrator to software engineer, tech lead, architect and ultimately to Director of Engineering. I have solid experience building and leading efforts on enterprise, web and mobile application projects. I have lead development efforts on sizable projects with both local, remote and offshore resources. A recovering Java addict, I have found new pleasure in learning new, modern programming languages. Always looking for the latest trends in application development. I enjoy being hands on ‘in the code’ and keeping skills sharp - coding is in my blood.

Am currently an evangelist/advocate for ‘reactive’ programming using such technologies from the Lightbend Reactive Platform including: Scala, Akka, Apache Kafka and NoSQL DBs such as Mongo DB.

Experience

TEAM LEAD, TRAX DATA REFINERY, SCOTTSDALE AZ, MAY 2018 - CURRENT

Lead two teams of engineers (one local to Scottsdale and one in Bangalore, India) in building key software for Trax. This involves setting architecture for modern SaaS based platform using NodeJS & Scala. Established Tectonic Kubernetes clusters and container approach for existing RESTful APIs. Helped set new micro-service direction. Part of various ‘guilds’ - API and Architecture - where senior engineers share knowledge/direction with the global engineering team.

CHIEF ARCHITECT, EXCEDA US; PHOENIX, AZ MARCH 2013 - MAY 2018

Working with the executive team, responsible for setting the technical direction of the company. Very strong, daily hands on involvement in building a series of next-generation cloud based and mobile applications and services utilizing cutting edge technologies, including, Scala, Play Framework, Akka, MongoDB, Kubernetes, Apache Kafka, Angular JS, and CoffeeScript. Set development practices and process as well as manage a small team of engineers. Created XCDN (http://xcdn.exceda.com) e-commerce product, helped define, develop and establish new lines of business including the Exceda Managed Performance (web performance optimization) and Exceda Balance (multi-CDN) services.

DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, LIMELIGHT NETWORKS; TEMPE, AZ - JULY 2008 - FEB 2013

Started as a consultant, converted over to team lead, eventually Engineering Manager and ultimately Director of Engineering (final 2 years). Was responsible for managing 10 direct reports and 8 other individuals. Project team members were located locally in Tempe, AZ as well as remote in L’viv, Ukraine. Was responsible for the technical architecture of multiple projects, including the CDN Customer portal, Configuration Management System and various other customer facing APIs. Provided technical thought leadership for the software engineering organization by conducting bi-weekly technical brown bag sessions. Championed both process and technology changes as necessary. I worked closely with product management, operations and technical leaders in various other Limelight business units to ensure product development and production support issues are handled in a rapid manner. Interacted with executive team to provide updates and feedback on various product initiatives.

Lead efforts to modernize the web application and API development by adopting JavaScript SPA concepts, Mongo DB and Scala. Legacy applications my teams were responsible for were implemented using the Spring Framework with Java.

SENIOR ARCHITECT/US TEAM LEAD, AO FOUNDATION; PHOENIX, AZ OCT 2007 - JULY 2008

Independent consultant for AO Foundation as a Senior Software Architect. Worked on directing US team (5 engineers) efforts on project to create a new portal for the Foundation. Platform was Websphere Portal, Spring Framework, Web Services (IBM) and Hibernate. With the product manager, interfaced directly with client on behalf of the team to gather requirements and apply appropriate design.
