Professional Experience
Network Engineer, BT Global Services, Reston, VA 2003 to Present
Design, implement and maintain network infrastructure for global clients as part of multi-year outsourcing arrangements. Experienced in LAN, WAN and WLAN network technologies in multi-location, multi-vendor environments. Led interdisciplinary teams (client, server and shop floor automation) tasked with delivering complex solutions to meet customer budgets and timeframes. From 2005-2007 managed a team of 9 professional network staff spread between 3 locations. Projects were executed across several global regions (Americas, EMEA and Asia PAC).
Acted as lead resource for the Cisco Catalyst switch upgrade at 30+ customer locations where the LAN hardware had gone End-of-Life (EOL). Developed standard Bills of Material (BOM’s) for all sites totaling $500,000 after customer discount. Wrote Low Level Design (LLD) documents for approval by the customer and attended monthly steering meetings. In addition, handled the implementation of 6 individual sites implementing standard 802.1x port security to meet customer requirements. Took lead on the design/implementation of customer headquarters site with over 3000 LAN drops. Performed all pre-installation analysis (power, rack space and layout) prior to authoring LLD. Performed integration with UNIX, security, printer and video conferencing vendors to ensure new IP address scheme worked seamlessly. Finally, wrote firewall rules to ensure continued communication between the new and legacy IP address spaces. This project benefited the customer by providing simplified network management thorough common hardware, software and configurations.
Provided integration and network design/implementation for initial shop floor automation effort at the customer’s Montreal plant. Designed a standard three-tiered configuration to allow engineers network access to a drilling tool on the shop floor for purposes of calibration and records retrieval. Data security was ensured by utilizing a DMZ with Checkpoint firewall protection on both the access and egress to the DMZ in order to reach the Windows database server in the DMZ. User accounts were further screened using Active Directory. Wrote firewall rules to control traffic flow so an unauthorized user would be unable to access the tool on the shop floor directly to make changes or gather information.
Served as lead technical resource for a network integration of an acquisition with a multi-site campus infrastructure. Developed initial designs for both LAN, WAN and WiFi and then managed the implementation of network hardware (switches, routers and wireless controllers) against a predetermined project schedule. While implementing new infrastructure also developed interim solutions for IPT and WiFi environments that interconnected the legacy and new equipment to provide seamless functionality during the user PC rollout. A second phase of the project involved installation of an inter-network gateway at a 3rd party collocation site.
Directed the network implementation of a multi-site LAN upgrade to support the customer rollout of a new Microsoft OS. Project entailed managing a team of 7 engineers who were responsible for the design, procurement and implementation of individual site LAN upgrades on a stringent schedule. Handled escalations and special circumstances in addition to being the technical lead (design, BOM and implement) for several of the site upgrades. Implementation frequently involved managing 3rd party cable vendors.
Worked as a member of a project team tasked with implementing a new Cisco wireless environment in the customers manufacturing facilities. The objective was to employ wireless RF scanning guns to track products from initial raw materials through finished goods. Conducted site surveys, determined cost for both hardware/cabling and managed the entire installation. Handled configuration (VLAN/HSRP/DHCP/SSID) and test of the final system at several large manufacturing sites.
Designed IP addressing schemes for multiple locations with sites being as large as 1000 devices. Final address schema needed to meet many criteria: optimize utilization of address blocks (client used only public addresses so quantity was limited), minimize collision domains and make L2/L3 switching possible to manage flow of traffic over both the LAN and WAN. Address management required learning the Diamond IP address management system.
Technology Development Specialist, Unilever PLC, Trumbull, CT 1998 to 2003
Responsible for design of network architecture enhancements to a multi-location, multinational routed infrastructure. Designs encompassed both LAN and WAN technologies including 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Frame Relay and multi-protocol routing (RIP, OSPF). CPE experience in routers, switches and multiplexors.
Developed IP addressing scheme to support the roll out of a new NT desktop platform to 50+ locations.
Key member of design/implementation team responsible for international infrastructure upgrade to improve e-mail transaction and general response time to European division. Installed solution improved response time by over 40%. Project managed activities of third party network providers for international circuits and services.
Member of team that designed the network integration between Unilever and an acquired Company. Met objective to provide a uniform WAN infrastructure to provide connectivity from user sites to three data centers. Design encompassed logical and physical aspects of the network (BGP/EIGRP routing and CPE installation/configuration). Also managed third party integration services for field implementation.
