Graduated May 2016
During the course of my PhD program in physics (ongoing) I received a Master of Science under my advisor Dr Y. W. Kim. My time there was spent attending classes, instructing classes, and performing research. A selection of my published research includes
1. Richards, Howard L., et al. "Shape Comparison Between Non-equilibrium Droplets and Equilibrium Crystal Shapes for the 2D Ising Model." Bulletin of the American Physical Society 57 (2012). 2. Raffield, Jesse, et al. "Phase separation on a hyperbolic lattice." Physics Procedia 53 (2014): 82-89. 3. KIM, Y. W.; RAFFIELD, J. H. "Sound propagation in thermally-forced copper-nickel alloy." Lehigh University
Teaching assistant
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
August 2014 – Present
My responsibilities included creating lecture material, overseeing and directing lab use by students, and grading. I was also responsible for organizing student tutoring and class supplements during my office hours. Research Experience
My current research focuses on investigating how disorder affects the composition of metallic alloys as they cool from liquid to solid. Our primary tool is a 2D granular experiment that uses a novel mechanism to simulate the effects of temperature and density on a simple alloy. My contributions to this project were to refine the computer vision interface that collects and digitizes data from the experiment and the creation of complex analysis programs in both Java and C++. With my involvement the project was able to expand the amount of data that can be processed as well as its speed.
