SERVICE ACTIVITIES
Work Experience:
Baton Rouge Orthopedics Clinic Orthopedic Spine October 2017-April 2018
NATURE OF DUTIES: The nature of the duties is to provide patient care in surgery and clinic settings in support of supervising physician.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
1. Functions as a First Assist for surgical procedures. Ensures the highest level of patient care and safety. Assists hospital or surgical facility staff with equipment, instruments, and supplies as appropriate.
2. Assists the supervising physician with clinic visits which includes, but is not limited to, the following: a. Obtains patient history; b. Performs physical examination on the patient; c. Orders imaging and lab studies as appropriate; d. Dictates visit notes; e. Prescribes medication, orthotics, braces, and other orthopedic devices as necessary; f. Formulates a diagnosis; and, g. Formulates a plan of care.
3. Clinic duties include, but is not limited to, the following: a. Schedules surgical procedures; b. Performs pre-operative and post-operative care; c. Changes dressings; Job Description: Physician Assistant Page 2 of 4 d. Prescribes medication, orthotics, braces, and other orthopedic devices as necessary; e. Dictates visit notes; f. Applies/removes casts; and, g. Performs injections/aspirations.
4. Functions independently, in the clinic setting, in the absence of the supervising physician. These functions are at the discretion of the supervising physician and BROC policy and are limited to patient visits and services for non-complicated rechecks, pre-operative, post-operative, injection, routine follow-up, cast change, and dressing change appointments.
5. Hospital duties include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Assists the supervising physician with performing the initial evaluation and management of patients in the Emergency Department; b. Assists the supervising physician with performing inpatient daily rounds; c. Assists the supervising physician with performing inpatient consults; and, d. Assist the supervising physician with performing inpatient chart documentation, signatures, updates, discharge summaries, etc.
6. Completes surgical procedure billing paperwork and submits to the appropriate personnel.
7. Returns phone calls to patients and their family members, hospital staff, home health care agencies, physical therapists, vendors, etc.
8. Performs on-call duties timely and professionally to include, but not limited to, the following: a. Fields phone calls after hours and on weekends; b. Rounds for all clinic physicians’ patients; c. Assists in after hours emergency and inpatient consults; and, d. Assists in after hours surgical procedures.
9. Understands and follows all OSHA and HIPAA rules at all times.
Clinical Rotations:
Preceptor- Orthopedic Surgery - University Medical Center New Orleans/ Tulane Medical Center/ Tulane Lakeside Hospital
First Assist Duties: help positioning of the patient according to surgeon preference, Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, manipulation of soft tissue or bone for resection or reduction, applying dressings or splints on operated limb, transfer patient to recovery
Specialty Procedures: performed with residents and attending, hardware removal, total joint arthoplasty of hip, shoulder and knee, tendon lengthening procedures to fix club foot, removal of osteochondroma, applying/removing external fixator, femoral head core decompression of hip with fibular graft, correction of hallux valgus and open reduction internal fixation of fractures (radius, ulna, femur, tibia, calcaneus, humerus, patella)
Consult duties: perform physical exam and take medical history in the emergency room and inpatient floor, apply splints or casts, assess skin integrity, change dressings, interpret x-rays and appropriate labs
Floor duties: take medical history and physical exam, interpret labs, present to resident or attending during rounds, write notes
Clinic duties: take medical history and physical exam (knee, hips, shoulder, ankle, wrist, low back) perform injections of knees, shoulders, wrist and trigger points, present patient information to resident or attending
Elective- Neurosurgery - University Medical Center New Orleans
Floor duties: take medical history and physical exam, interpret labs, present to resident or attending during rounds, write notes
First Assist Duties: help positioning of the patient according to surgeon preference, foley catheter placement, closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, working with a surgical microscope, surgeries included corpectomy, laminectomy, vertebral fusion using anterior and posterior approach on cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, decompression craniotomy, and removal of brain tumor
Clinic Duties: take medical history and physical exam (neurologic exam involving cranial nerves, muscle strength, tone and bulk, reflexes, coordination, sensory function, low back exam), interpret imaging x-rays, MRI and CT, present to resident or attending
