Design and economic analysis of a polylactic acid manufacturing plant (January 2018 – May 2018)

Goal of the project is to research and design a chemical manufacturing plant to manufacture 300 million pounds per year of polylactic acid polymer from a feed stream of raw lactic acid solution.

Worked with a team to analyze the economical cost to design the plant by investigating required equipment and estimated costs; including the cost of energy and steam required per year for plant operation.

Use data analysis and charting methods to ensure the measurements and matrix specifications meet the design requirements, and evaluating the raw materials, equipments and process parameters.

Use UniSim software to design the recycling streams, lactide and pre-polymer reactors, distillation columns, the evaporaters, and the process flow diagrams (PFD) for the manufacturing plant.

Write and present technical documents detailing the manufacturing process and design of the chemical plant.

Transdermal drug patch using emulsion (August 2017 – December 2017)

Design of a drug patch based on water-olive oil emulsion to deliver a chosen drug through the skin to the bloodstream at a prescribed average rate.

Drug dissolved in 0.1mm thick layer of emulsion with a composition of 50% water, 50% olive oil.

Used MATLAB software to solve the transdermal diffusion problem and to determine the milligrams of drug delivered to systemic circulation in 24 hours per centimeter squared of patch area.

Small-scale wind turbine design (August 2014 – December 2014)

We examined and tested multiple design factors for a small-scale wind turbine in order to optimize the power output of the turbine.

We tested different materials for the propeller-like blades in order to maximize performance and investigated multiple design layouts of he system to mitigate energy losses.

Eventually we had to create and present technical documents for our particular design and the results we were able to obtain.
