Professional Experience
Current Position: Independent optometrist doing fill-in (PRN) at various practices, primarily the LASIK Vision Institute (VA Beach, VA and Rockville, MD) Feb 2018 to present; and Sterling Optical (Temple Hills, MD) June 2018 to present
Past Positions:
Doctor of Optometry - Best Vision, PLLC (via NVI, Inc.) Aug 2016 – Dec 2017
Provided primary eye care to a diverse patient population in the Richmond, VA area and suburbs. I referred patients to many ophthalmologists in the area, often received feedback and in the process, developed a great rapport with several of them.
Doctor of Optometry - Kaiser Permanente (Mid-Atlantic States) Dec 2014 – May 2016
I practiced within Vision Essentials by Kaiser Permanente (vision departments), and worked at multiple centers with highly morbid patient populations.
oOur patient bases at those centers had high incidences of glaucoma, diabetes and hypertension, the latter two often along with their ocular manifestations (diabetic and hypertensive retinopathies of various degrees, and often with other associated conditions).
oI also saw countless cases of ocular surface disorders and a host of other anterior and posterior segment conditions. That experience significantly enhanced my knowledge of ocular and systemic diseases. Kaiser Permanente is a highly integrated, multidisciplinary system, and that greatly increased my exposure to various conditions. I learned a great deal from working closely with ophthalmologists, especially given the added benefit of sharing medical records within a secure EMR system (EPIC Health Connect).
Independent/sublease O.D. - Sears Optical (Mays Landing, NJ) Jun 2013- Nov 2014
I worked at my sub-lease practice most of the time, and filled in elsewhere (several practices) as needed. I did comprehensive primary care and contact lens fittings, as well as ocular disease management. My sublease practice was broader in scope than the average retail setting, as I took a keen interest in my patients’ overall eye health, not just their refractive conditions.
Associate O.D. - Family Vision Care Associates, Atlantic City, NJ Dec 2012 - Oct 2014
At FVCA, I practiced full-scope optometry at a high-volume urban setting: Primary care; specialty contact lenses; ocular disease management especially ocular surface disorders, red eyes, glaucoma. I worked full-time from December 2012 to May 2013, and part-time from May 2013 to October 2014. Prior to joining Family Vision Care Associates in December 2012, I filled in at a few practices in Maryland between August and November 2012 (as a new OD graduate, shortly after becoming licensed to practice optometry). I recall filling in at The LASIK Vision Institute in Rockville during that period (the interval between licensing and moving to NJ), and I did get to observe a LASIK procedure or two.
Intern - Sharper Vision - Duluth, GA Mar - May 2012
There, I provided primary care to a diverse population of patients; I also received great exposure to specialty (toric and multifocal) contact lens fittings, as well as treatment and management of ocular diseases. During this period, I also got to observe a few cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) procedures at OMNI Eye in Atlanta.
Intern - Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut (OCC) – Fairfield, CT Jan - Feb 2012
This position involved seeing a large and diverse group of patients at a busy OD/MD referral center, where I had exposure to secondary care, pre- and post-op care, and also observed a few ocular surgery procedures.
Intern - Inter American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR), School of Optometry Aug 2010 - Dec 2011
Within our IAUPR-SO system, I provided primary eye care to a large Hispanic population with a high incidence rate of glaucoma, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathies. Exams were at multiple in-house clinics, and mostly in Spanish.
Intern - Vision and Conceptual Development Center (VCDC) – Bethesda, MD Jun 2011
As an intern at the VCDC, I worked up patients for vision therapy evaluation, observed VT training sessions, and received teaching sessions on VT and developmental optometry concepts.
Intern - American Optometric Association (AOA) Washington Office - Alexandria, VA Jun - Aug 2010
I gained exposure to policy aspects of optometry through Capitol Hill trips and other assignments, often working alongside AOA Washington office staff.
At AOA Washington, I also worked with a staff O.D. on an AOA-EPA collaborative project.
Student Health Aide - University Health Center Dec 2006 - Feb 2007 University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)
At the UMCP Health Center, I checked in patients, prepared their charts, took vital signs and provided general assistance in triage area.
