DATA MODELING

Created a model that predicts if height is an important component on how good a soccer player can be based on regression analysis.

The objective of this model was to investigate if there is a correlation or relationship between a soccer player’s height particularly strikers and some suspected factors such as goals, assists, goals per match, shots on target, goals with header, and goals with footer. Using these factors, it can be determined how one’s height can impact their success in soccer.

If the aim is to predict if height is important, then large data will be needed to get good estimation in our model. More factors are needed because in our case in order to run a good model that performs well, it is essential to have more variables and as many observations as possible.

Following the above assumption, I randomly collected the data of the height of 35 soccer players above 6ft and the height of 35 players below 6ft – a total of 70 players from 2005 to 2016. These players range from 22 to 30 years of age. This data is collected from the top two soccer leagues in the world – EPL (English Premier league) and La Liga (Spanish league).

For analysis I used on three methods 1) multiple regression analysis (The analysis of variance (ANOVA) table and Residuals 2) Normal distribution (Residual vs Quantile Plot) 3) Scatter plots

After examining these factors using regression analysis, we got mixed results. The results indicate that height of soccer player is significant factor only when it comes to GH (goals with head). This makes sense because it is more likely a taller player will jump higher than shorter one, which is why height is important for GH. On the other hand, we find height is not a significant factor for the remaining factors.
