Refractories Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Product Development Engineer, Quality Control

Professional Summary:

Wahl Refractory Solutions 11/01/12 - 03/31/18

Title: Senior Research Scientist

Stationed at the Wahl Refractory Solutions Tech-Center, I managed a team of lab technicians and reported to the Director of Technology. My primary duties at Wahl were to develop monolithic castables for steel, aluminum, copper, and cement manufacturing industries. Most of these products are currently sold as precast shapes, i.e. electric arc furnace deltas, steel ladle bottoms, ladle lip rings, MegaBrix for aluminum furnaces, troughs, nose blocks for cement kilns, and others. I was also very involved with developing various shotcrete materials for Wahl. On various occasions I have been onsite to technically assist installations at customers.

I supported Wahl’s legacy product lines through continuous improvement efforts, evaluating alternative sources of raw materials, as well as assisting the Quality Department in problem solving. I generated custom dry-out schedules for customers as well as for Wahl’s precast production. I ran heat flow calculations to assist in oven design. I produced technical data sheets and safety data sheets.

I trained lab personnel on the various ASTM tests commonly used in the refractory industry, i.e. tap flow, self-flow, cold crushing strength, cold & hot modulus of rupture, thermal shock tests, etc. I trained lab personnel on loading, operation, & maintenance of laboratory ovens. I also taught Wahl’s introductory refractory course to all new hires.

Ransom & Randolph, Dentsply 12/09/96 - 10/31/2012

Title: Product Development Engineer

Ransom & Randolph manufactures investment casting powders as well as specialty binders for the investment casting industry. I performed the duties of Product Development Engineer and managed a team of lab technicians. I ascertained the desires of target accounts and then planned and conducted research for developing new products to fit those desires. This goal involved international travel, keen communications skills, thorough understanding of the casting processes as well as refractory and bonding materials, and an ability to balance those with economic conditions.

Immediately prior, I was the Applications Engineer for both the Jewelry & Solid Mold areas. In this role, I traveled internationally to many customers to teach them proper techniques of lost wax casting. Before that, I performed the duties of Materials Engineer, where I was responsible for development of new products as well as new processes. I worked closely with the production team to resolve process and control problems.

Earlier, I was the Quality Control Laboratory Supervisor at Ransom & Randolph’s Maumee manufacturing facility. In this position, I led a team of laboratory technicians in testing and adjusting production batches. Prior to being QC Supervisor, I was a laboratory technician in the same lab.

Publications: I have published and presented research papers for the Santa Fe Symposium on Jewelry Manufacturing Technology, the World Gold Council, the American Foundry Society, the Bullseye Glass Conference, and the Glass Art Society.

Owens Corning (contracted through ITS Technologies) 2/12/96 - 11/29/96

I was part of a team of Owens Corning professionals who work toward regulatory compliance in all of the Owens Corning facilities.
