Laboratory/Research experience

For my final year project I worked under the supervision of Prof. Ken O’Halloran, head of Department of Physiology, and Dr. Eric Lucking in the physiology lab for 6 months. We investigated the effects of acute hypoxia on rat diaphragm function in vivo. I received an overall grade of 68% for this project. My duties:

Measure the transdiaphragmatic pressure of the animals during ventilatory/non- ventilatory behaviors

Take blood samples

Dissect and harvest the desirable tissues (diaphragm muscle, heart, spleen, lungs)

Further dissection on the heart

Statistical analysis

Examine and evaluate the results of the experiment

Write up scientific paper

Use of microtome to prepare tissue sections

Other skills and languages

Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, GraphPad Prism, Labchart. Preparation of Abstracts and first drafts of Methods and Materials section for scientific papers. Fluent in Irish.

Presented at a national conference- Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland’s section in Biomedical Sciences Annual Meeting 2017.

Shortlisted for the Donegan Medal Competition.

Have an abstract conference publication.
