Summary and Skills

I am a recent engineering graduate searching for long-term employment with a company that matches my appreciation for enthusiasm, hard work, and communication. I am a quick learning team player with great multi-tasking and time management skills. I am familiar with many different software including LabVIEW, Solidworks, C++, Arduino, and more. I have multiple years of design and lab experience in engineering. These experiences have required effective communication skills involved with group technical brainstorming in relation to engineering design, reporting to management, and designing to customer specifications. These skills have been reinforced via the below experiences, along with extra-curricular activities such as mentoring and sponsorship via the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI), involvement as a university tutor, and other part-time employment.

Experience

Graduate Researcher/ Ph.D. Candidate: Robotics May 2016-December 2016

I worked as a graduate research assistant for the bio-inspired robotics, technology, and healthcare (birth.engineering.asu.edu) lab at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. The lab studied animal biomechanics in order to develop robotic technologies that could traverse many different terrains and extreme environments. I acted as the team leader in the development of friction and adhesion testing device for switchable adhesives operating in extreme environments and space technology. I assisted in other robotic project technical design solutions, brainstorming, and controller coding, while continuously improving areas of own project, such as software and controls. This position utilized iteration and confirmation of engineering principles and the design process. I successfully wrote and executed adhesion-testing controls in LabVIEW System Design Software. As the only certified LabVIEW associate developer in the lab, I acted as the lab’s main resource for the software. I delivered weekly technical updates and solutions to the lab and supervisor. I formulated proposals for grants and funding for the lab and contacted government officials (NASA) for collaboration. I represented the lab at conferences and meetings. This position was offered to me upon undergraduate graduation as a promotion from an undergraduate researcher. It included waived tuition and a stipend pay as compensation. Thus, I was enrolled as a robotics Ph.D. candidate in the mechanical engineering school. I left this position to pursue a career outside of academia.

Collaborated with manufacturing engineers to implement vacuum feed through design that saved lab $30,000

Oversaw 3 undergraduates, collaborated with >5 vendors and >5 industry professionals, while coordinating with supervisor about mechanical engineering design and principles used in the project

Networked with NASA contact that resulted in our research being recommended for collaboration with other companies

20-30+ hours per week

Undergraduate Researcher August 2015-May 2016

I worked as an undergraduate researcher in the same lab as the graduate research experience recommended above. I was one of ten original members of the lab. I served my team leader mainly by learning and executing the LabVIEW software for actuator and other third party hardware control. I assisted in the research surrounding the development of a friction and adhesion-testing device within engineering, technical, and cost feasibility. I analyzed state-of-the-art switchable adhesives in order to build and improve designs for robotic applications in space and extreme-environment technology. I left this position because of undergraduate graduation and the internal promotion.

Performance in this position resulted in my promotion to a funded, graduate researcher position

With nearly zero LabVIEW experience, I became proficient and obtained certification as a certified LabVIEW associate developer on the first attempt.

Successfully designed purchasing excel sheets for lab.

10+ hours per week

Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) Recipient January 2016-August 2016

This position was a public relations and mentorship opportunity provided by the university. I had to petition for the school to fund my participation as an undergraduate researcher. The university only has a specific budget for funding students, so it is competitive and an honor to receive funding through this initiative. It provided a stipend as compensation for the work in this position combined with the work in the undergraduate research lab. I left this position because of undergraduate graduation.

Advertised and promoted personal research involvement and University opportunities

Presented progression of research to peers, faculty, and industry professionals at symposiums

Assisted and mentored other undergraduates in pursuits of University involvement and research

Mandatory 10+ hours per week

Senior Capstone Design Project Lead August 2015-May 2016

I worked as the project leader for my senior capstone engineering design culmination through

Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. I oversaw other undergraduates and communicated with an academic mentor about the project. Our academic mentor acted as our project customer. The group successfully utilized knowledge of the engineering design process to fabricate a fully automated and calibrated multi-needle injection system for MRI. I oversaw and assisted in the design and execution of software controls via C language on the Arduino microcomputer. I oversaw and assisted in the Solidworks designs for additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping. I successfully managed the documentation techniques of the project in relation to strict ISO and FDA regulatory pathways (510(k)). The group continuously presented the progression of our device development to peers, faculty, and industry professionals. I left this position because of undergraduate graduation.

Oversaw and effectively communicated with 3 other undergraduates and an academic mentor acting as the customer with design specifications

Delivered a fully, functioning product under the $200 budget restriction and 4 month manufacturing timeline

Our group documented each area of the design process in a DR, PDR, DHF, DMR, DHR, and QSR--all in regulation with FDA 21 CFR part 820.

Mandatory 16+ hours per week

Bioengineering Intern May-June 2014

I worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA under the mechanical heart program as a bioengineering intern. I scrubbed into the operating rooms for many different procedures, which resulted in long hours sometimes 16 hours a day. Due to these long days, I was able to learn a lot in the short amount of time I was with the hospital. Unfortunately, because this position was unpaid, I was only able to work for about a month and a half before I had to pursue paid employment as a restaurant server.

Assembled models (left ventricular assist device (LVAD): HeartMate II by Thoratec and HVAD: Heartware by Medtronic) for patient understanding using expired devices and other common hospital material to simulate cardiac function with device

Shadowed mechanical heart engineers in operating room for ablation therapy, open heart transplants, and LVAD implants

Attended weekly program meetings and provided assistance depending on vacancies in mechanical heart program workspace
