Masonry Worker

Perform corrective maintenance on structures and surfaces.

Laid common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks, manholes, and catch basins.

Perform bricklaying on new construction projects. Reviews work order requirements reflecting projects to be completed. Make changes to job layout based on site inspection of project. Interprets and applies blueprints, engineering drawings, and manuals to determine materials, tools and equipment needed for the project. Determine methods and techniques to be used.

Perform concrete placing and finishing on new construction projects. Work on surfaces such as sidewalks, curbs, ramps, roads, driveways, alleys, and unimproved alleys, and surfaces that require precise measurements and involve the setting of forms in curved and straight lines. Breaks concrete using jackhammer or similar equipment. Removes concrete using buggies, wheelbarrows, or shovels. Prepares subsurface by leveling ground and tamping fill material, such as sand, dirt, or gravel. Build and set forms and install concrete joints and reinforcing material, such as steel or wire to obtain maximum strength. Perform preliminary and final finishing and shapes rolling curbs and drains to proper grade and contour. Finishes surfaces to specified desired finish and texture by such methods as rubbing or applying a smooth coat of mortar. Eliminates defects caused by bubbles and hollow spots.

Perform tile setting on new construction and repairs of existing buildings. Cuts and shape tiles, or stones in constructing and repairing of new and existing surfaces. Ensures courses are laid evenly and that completed work blends with existing surface material. Applies various techniques to create decorative designs and patterns and obtain desired finish. Cut openings in tile where required. Repair walkways, sidewalks, etc., with brick, stone or tile sorted by size and shape and lay to obtain strength and appearance.

Demolish and remove walls, form, partitions, and foundations using jackhammers and other demolition tools.

Perform minor and extensive repairs, which may involve the tearing out of defective brick, Inspecting bared steel members for evidence of warp or breakage; removing loose mortar and debris; fabricating arch and key bricks with masonry saw when such bricks are not available; and wetting new refractory brick in accordance with accepted trade practices. Take periodic inventories of all nonexpendable tools and equipment assigned to individuals.

Prepare and submit daily work reports showing work performed, job status work location and materials and labor utilized.

Utilize safety practice and procedures, following established safety rules and regulations and maintained a safe and clean work environment. Use and assure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Follow Federal and District of Columbia rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards. Perform clean-up duties such as cleaning equipment, sweeping, straightening, and lining up tools, and other property in the assigned area.
