Amistad is a Federally Qualified Health Care Center that serves the uninsured population in the Corpus Christi area. The patients seen there are chronically ill with the triad illnesses of Diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. It was exciting to work with these individuals due to the challenge of managing their illness with limited resources. Amistad works closely with Texas A&M to provide Diabetic education and medication assistance for the many patients that cannot afford their medication. Mercy has been named one of the top largest U.S. health systems. Hospitals and clinics are located in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma. I also organized a patient education program for diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and other chronic diseases in which I would meet with the patient and their family members and educate them about their illness using written and interactive online materials. After they fully understood the nature of their illness, a plan of care was developed with the patient and treatment goals were established. Twice a week, I would travel to St. James, Missouri and treat the health care needs of the child and adolescent population of Great Circle Behavioral Health Community which assisted homeless children ages 6-21. Great Circle is contracted with Mercy and it was an honor to be chosen to be their primary health care provider.
