Controller - MJ Manufacturing – a division of Martinrea International 2004 - 2017
Job Order process in metal fabrication (Laser cut, Bend and Weld).
Major Customers are Bombardier Rail, Orion Bus, John Deere, GDLS (Military Vehicles).
I was responsible for 2 divisions: MJ Canada, and MJ USA. Cradle to the grave responsibility including the Annual Audit package, 5 Year Business Plan, Weekly Forecasts and Monthly and Quarterly Financial Statements with associated analysis. A staff of 2 we closed the month in 4 days, and managed payroll, treasury and finance. A large portion of the role was mentored the General and Assistant General Manager on business issues, and provided coaching to Engineering and Plant personnel to assess the feasibility of cost reduction ideas.
Implemented Daily Flash Report to provide up to date delivery comparison to Forecast and Budget.
Developed measurables to evaluate, monitor and direct the Business Plan and Continuous Improvement Activities by determining data flow and reporting – are we winning today?
Champion of Operational Excellence ( cost saving initiatives from all departments ) YTD saving of 275k on target for 700k for the year
1M foreign exchange gain in 2015, YTD 2017 250k gain. By timing of conversion and self-hedging where possible
Burden Rate and Quotation Form redesign to adopt Activity Based Costing structure by defining Work Centres, Head Count, Freight by component, SPC costs, setups, etc.
Direct Labour dropped from 18% to 12% by trimming our contracts to only those with good returns
Maintained positive net income and cash flow despite sales drop from 75M to 22M after Orion bus plant closure. Redesigned the quoting system with more realistic overhead rates.
