Technical Director, Mainframe Database Administration 2014 – 2017

Managed IMS and DB2 database environment including both database administration and database systems software, and associated database tools (IBM, CA, BMC, Informatica, Oracle). Ensured optimal database availability and efficiencies of the environment. Provided both managerial responsibilities as well as technical leadership for team of 16 Database Administrators and Systems programmer resources.

Mainframe Efficiency Improvements - Led mainframe performance and tuning initiative that resulted in capacity reduction (MIPS) required to meet business needs. Provided $3M savings 2016-2017 on hardware and software costs with projected “hard” savings of $15M + over 5 years.

Modernization of Mainframe Environment – Advanced the use of Sysplex technology to reduce costs, improve flexibility, and increase reliability and efficiency of the platform. Successfully built framework to support workload balancing including CICSPlex, Distributed DVIPA, and application COBOL program modifications required to run in Sysplex environment.

Reliability Improvements – Implemented process, procedures, and production support improvements that resulted in record levels of availability for mainframe applications. This efforted was key to many business performance metric improvements experienced in 2016 (e.g. reduction in train delays caused by technology).

Technical Director, Infrastructure Provisioning 2008 – 2014

Directed Technology Infrastructure provisioning team including physical server administration, enterprise storage administration, and virtual infrastructure administration. Provided project management, financial management, and technical direction for technical team of 28 systems administrators. Responsible for enterprise infrastructure capacity planning and performance and tuning across all platforms.

Infrastructure Virtualization – Leveraged virtualization technology to expand server virtualization to 95% of the server environment including Windows and Linux servers, as well as the virtualization of large Exchange and Citrix environments. Initiated the use of storage virtualization and thin provisioning to drive flexibility and efficiencies in the enterprise storage environment. Conservative cost saving estimate from infrastructure virtualization over 6 years approximately $30M.

Disaster Recovery Enhancements – Improved mid-tier server DR accuracy and reduced recovery timeline by automating restart of open systems servers using VMware SRM. Recovery Time Objective (RTO) reduced from 10 hours to 2 hours.

Cloud Computing – Led team that developed initial corporate Cloud Computing Strategy which contained roadmap and recommendations on how and when “Cloud Services” should be utilized. Provided education on Cloud to the organization.

Technical Director, Windows Server Support 2004 – 2008

Managed Windows Server Administration team which included server hardware management, windows server software administration, Citrix, and Exchange, and SharePoint Administration. Provided project and financial management and technical direction for technical team of 20 systems administrators.

Server Platform Improvements – Standardized server hardware to drive reliability improvements and reduce support costs. Managed the upgrade of Windows server operating system to vendor supported OS level. (1000+ Windows NT servers successfully migrated to Server 2003).

Server Virtualization – coordinated the evaluation, and deployment of server virtualization to drive significant improvements including applications reliability, increased agility and asset utilization, and reduced costs.

Security Enhancements – Built improved security assessment review process and automated the deployment of security patches (WSUS) to ensure optimal, secured server environment.

Manager Database, Storage and Backup Systems 1998 – 2004

Managed Database Systems software and Enterprise Storage and Backup team. Team maintained Mainframe Database Systems Software and managing enterprise storage infrastructure as well as enterprise backups for all platforms. Provided extensive technical leadership, project management, financial management for technical team of 14 systems administrators.

Disaster Recovery Improvements – Implemented remote disk mirroring technology to replicate mission critical data from local site to remote site. This eliminated the need for time intensive manual data recoveries at remote site and significantly reduced recovery time objective (RTO) targets for DR.

Data Backup Process Enhancements – Standardized and deployed enterprise “open systems” backup solution to improve local backup/recoverability of mid-tier data.
