OBJECTIVES
To solve problems and design around them. Share past experience with a team of scientists, engineers & technicians, preferably supporting a prototype R&D environment in an Electro-mechanical setting; Opportunity to utilize design, problem solving, analytical and troubleshooting skills through versatility, adaptability, and common sense.
EXPERIENCE
Design and Implementation in the Electronics, Electromechanical, Mechanical, Pulsed Power, and Software Development fields in a ‘Laboratory Research Environment’
Development of prototype Non-Rotational Drill Bit for oil industry, worked with ultra-high voltage
In-Pile Nuclear Reactor Safety Research, prevent core melt downs by quenching debris bed
Electron Beam Accelerator Machine Diagnostics, Pulsed Power
Quartz Crystal Resonator Prototype Development
Printed Circuits Development
Manufacturing Engineering, Laser Plasma Tube Production Engineering Support
Environmental, Safety, & Health (ES&H) SNL Directorate Coordinator
Electromechanical: Designed, Fabricated, and Implemented High Pressure, High Vacuum, High temperature & LN2 Systems; Tooling and Design; Helium Leak Detection; Residual Gas Analysis; Fluid Analysis; Oxy-Acetylene Welding & Brazing; Vapor Deposition; CAD & Mechanical Drawing; Fabricate multiple IBM PC compatibles using OEM components.
AutoCAD: Designed system controls, plumbing and valving layout for ‘High Pressure drilling’ systems and ‘Press & Fixture tooling’ environments; Solved problems with conceptual design, completed CAD drawings and implemented solutions.
Electronics: Circuit Design, Instrumentation, Calibration, Troubleshooting, Pulsed Power, Automated Electro-pneumatic Control Systems, Laser Electro-Optics and Printed Wiring Development.
Software and Algorithm Development: Designed & wrote real-time Data Acquisition, Database, Graphics, and Project Specific Programming in BASIC, FORTRAN, dBASE, Assembly, NC machine code, and Visual Basic languages; I/O Interfacing over IEEE488 and RS232 busses. AB SLC-500 programming. Overly prideful in Relay Logic Control.
Instruction and Supervision: Conducted Safety Training courses; Seminars on Basic Vacuum and Operation; Use of Helium Leak Detectors; Overseer for laboratory technicians. Lay out preventive maintenance processes.
Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H), Sandia National Laboratories Geosciences Directorate Coordinator: OSHA, NEPA, HazCom, and Root Cause Analysis.
Writing: Authored numerous reports, procedures, guidelines, and instructions.
MAJOR ACHIEVMENTS
Assisted in the design of a prototype non-rotational drill bit for the oil industry; High Pressure Flow & Pumping Systems using Positive Displacement Pumps, Effluent Debris Handling, Fluid Analysis, Rock Characterization, Pulsed Power, Electro-mechanical sub-systems & control instrumentation design in support of this new drilling technology.
Designed and Implemented numerous Electronic and Mechanical sub-systems in a series of very successful In-Pile Nuclear Reactor Safety Experiments; including instrumentation, cooling systems, pressure proof testing, glass-metal seals integrated in containment feedthroughs.
Wrote the Real-time Data Acquisition software, algorithm development for same series of Reactor Experiments.
Designed and Implemented an Automated RF Induction H2 Bell Jar brazing system.
Designed and Implemented a Laser Plasma Tube Resonator Cavity test head station.
Designed and wrote the software for Development of Quartz Crystal Resonator and Accelerometer Parameter Characterization system; Frequency vs. Temperature Slew and Age Testing.
Designed and Implemented the tooling for an Optical Transmissivity and Reflectivity apparatus.
Designed & reverse engineered various press tooling and fixtures using AutoCAD 2000.
Assisted in the Design and Implementation of Four-Slot Registration System supporting Printed Wiring Panels which included Photo Tools, Direct Laser Imaging, Drilling, Routing, Prepreg Punching, and Lamination of Multi Layer products.

PERSONAL
USN Veteran (4 years); Have held DoD 'SECRET' and DOE 'Q' clearances and have been a team member on many civilian ‘Proprietary’ projects.
I am a ‘no nonsense’, old fashioned, ‘say it as it is’ kind of guy and sort of have a sense of humor. I know how to ‘listen’ and ‘sleep-on-it’ before making decisions. I use intuitive and innovative design techniques and typically think ‘outside the box’. I believe in letting the ‘big picture’ soak in before finalizing a decision, which initially takes some time but avoids otherwise unforeseen problems. Simple is better and faster.
I interact well with scientists and engineers, sub-contractors, production, QA & QC departments and understand the needs and concerns of each of them. I might add that I sympathize with MBA’s; I ‘can roll up my sleeves and make do with what we have, i.e., balancing the ‘budget vs. the needs’. I may need to refresh some earlier experience with specific software and equipment; Am a fast learner.
