Charge Nurse Relief duties

1.Head to toe assessment including – vital signs, laboratory results, in and out put, current fluid requirements, hemodynamic monitoring, nutritional maintenance. Monitors of changes in medical conditions and responses according to ACLS protocols. Ensure labs and diagnostics obtained and results called to MD. Maintain documentation of patient response to cancer treatments.

2.Medication administration: Administers and provides education for all medications including routine, newly ordered/stat via topical, PO, SQ, IM and IV routes. Perform venipuncture, IV. Access: routinely acquires IV access for peripheral and central line and implanted port management and other catheter devices. Maintain infection control standards.

3.Routine IV drip medications: maintenance fluids, antibiotics, electrolytes, TPN, lipids, blood and blood products, and various chemotherapy agents. Routine IV push: beta blockers, pain medications, diuretics, and ACLS protocol medications. Administer clinical trial infusions per strict guidelines.

4.Wounds/Drains: assessment and dressing changes for wounds and postoperative surgical sites/drains, chest tubes, NG tubes, colostomies, feeding tubes, urinary/SP catheters.

5.Prepare patients preoperatively for surgery ensuring all pre-op labs and diagnostics have been completed. Reads labs and x-rays reporting abnormalities as indicated. Code Response: responds to all codes as per hospital guidelines and ACLS protocols. Current ACLS certification as per American Heart Association standards.

6.Arrange transfers as indicated due to fluctuation of patient needs.

7.Participate in community and professional activities related to education and quality improvement for care and patient outcomes.

8.Participate in Float pool to allieve staffing shortages on other floors with the healthcare system. (Cardiac, Telemetry, ICU, Neuo/Ortho, Mother/Baby, ER Units)
