ProjectTitle: Voltagesagcompensationatpointofcommoncoupling(PCC)usingFaultcurrentlimiter(FCL) Description: Voltagesagisoneofmostcommonpowerqualitydisturbancesinelectricnetworks.Faultin distributionnetworkscancausevoltagesagatthenodesofthenetwork.Sensitiveloadgrowth andshortcircuitfaultsarethemainoriginofvoltagesagsandtherefore,thereisalossofvoltage quality.Faultcurrentlimiterismosteffectivedevicetocompensatevoltagesagandphaseangle jump0fthesubstationPCCafterfaultoccurrence.Hereweuseadiodebridgerectifierandwhen faultisoccurlargevalueofcurrentwillflow.Thesecurrentcausevoltagedrop,acpowerlosses onshuntbranchimpedanceanddcreactorpowerlossesinnormalcondition.Whenafaultoccurs Idcbecomegreaterthanmaximum permissiblecurrentIm,thensemiconductorswitchoff.So bridgeretreatsfromthefeederandshuntimpedanceentersthefaultedlneandlimitesthefault current.Atthismoment,freewheelingdiodedischargesLdc.Whenthefaultisremoved,whilethe switchisoff,shuntimpedanceconnectedinserieswiththeloadimpedance.Therefore,line currentwillbedecreasedinstantaneously.whenthedifferenceofILandIFgreaterthanasthe faultremovalsign,thecontrolcircuitturnsswitchON.Sothepowersystemreturnstonormal state.FCLreducesthetotalharmonicdistortiononloadvoltages.Sowewillhavegoodpower quality.FCLhavevariablelmpidance,whenfaultcurrentincreaseit’simpedanceincreasesto highervalue andwhenfaultcurrendecrease FCLquickly returns tolowimpedance.Utility benfitsfromFCLincreasessafety,reliabilityandpowerquality.Utilitiescanreducethecostof circuitbreakersandfusesbyinstallingFCL.FCLcanreducethesefaultcurrentstolevelsnot exceeding3-5timesthesteadystatecurrent,protectingandextendingthelifeoftransformers.
