Levels of orientation:
• Level 1: Basic computer charting/orders/protocols. Basic patient work-up on main 1 & triage. 1-2 patients with only minimal assistance from preceptor.
• Level 2: Able to take 3 patients and complete care of these patients with minimal assistance from preceptor.
• Level 3: Able to complete 4 patients with minimal assistance from preceptor. Or take a critical care patient with the ability to critically think/problem solve through advance procedures. Weekly meetings with preceptor and orientee were held to discussed patient population, strengths and areas for improvement.
Orientation included:
* 12 hour Ride-Along with a local EMS agency. The goals were to develop a relationship with local agencies and provide insight by the RN to the challenges in the pre-hospital environment.
* 4 hour shadow of Respiratory therapy to develop
understanding of ABGs, CPAP, BiPap and ventilator
management.
*Observation of a cardiac catheterization to reinforce STEMI protocols and cardiac pathophysiology.
* 8 hour EKG class with beef heart dissection class to reinforce EKG recognition and pathophysiology.
