04/2010 – 11/2011

Kohl’s – Milwaukee, WI, USA

I worked on a major project that involved replacing the current system that failed in handling hundreds of millions of messages that accumulated in the system last Black Friday. The MQ hub was replaced with 2 HACMP clusters with fail-over queue managers and cluster queue managers. It handles millions of messages in some problem queues with no issues in QA test. In Kohl’s, the E-Commerce environment consists of many queues that are set up to handle 10 million messages. That means that the messages that flow through those message queues could be hundreds of millions per day. My daily job is to keep the environment running smoothly. We monitor messages using QPasa. It will send out alerts when certain criteria are met. For example, it will send out an alert when some queues are nearly full, when some messages enter dead letter queue, or when the queue manager goes down. I also worked as MQ resource in 10 other large projects in web application systems development. My other duties included: fixing issues related to the installation of WMQ 7.0.1.5 onto various servers in a Window/Unix environment, the installation of a QPasa agent for monitoring tool, the creation of set-up scripting and configurations, and the definition and creation of queue managers, message queues and channels. After the installation of WMQ (version 7.0.1.5), I performed the verification of the WMQ server and configurations with successful message exchanges and server health checks. Some duties called were performing system tests with project teams, troubleshooting, and analyzing messaging errors in both web and mainframe applications. Kohl’s’ WMQ servers’ environment consists of over 1300 retail stores and the head office runs on multiple platforms including: UNIX, Windows, z/OS mainframe, iSeries (A/S 400), HP NonStop Tandem and Linux. Each store uses 2 WMQ servers to communicate with Head Office. The total WMQ servers for just Head Office - Stores communication consists of over 2600 WMQ servers. The corporate WMQ monitoring tools are Netcool and MQ Software’s QPasa. Some of my duties were to set up monitoring criteria for major production systems and SNMP traps that were sent to Netcool which in turn sent alerts to all related support staffs. I also handled users’ security, monitoring tool problems and SSL certificate management. My duties were to work with WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker and working with BEA Weblogic Administrators to resolve application system errors. I created PMR’s with IBM Corporation and resolved WebSphere related problems following Kohl’s Problem management Guidelines. I provided technical advice regarding standards and best practices to infrastructure teams during infrastructure design and build phases of web application projects. I upgraded most of the MQ servers from Version 6.0 to version 7.0.1.5.
