Mercy K. Miantona Personal Philosophy

Background

Reflecting on my nursing journey, it has had its own challenges but more rewarding overall due to the bright smile I see on my patients and their families’ faces after receiving care from me. As a little girl, all I dreamed of was becoming a compassionate and an advanced nurse, who will provide family centered and quality care to patients of all ages. Working as a nursing assistant for about 10 years, and seeing the many needs for nurses in the health field motivated me to initially obtain a two years degree in nursing. Since then, I have been self-motivated to continuously work on my dream by striving to obtain advanced knowledge to enable me deliver better, safer, advanced, and quality care to my patients and their families.

Statement of Purpose/ Personal Philosophy

My aim of pursuing an advanced nurse practitioner education is to provide quality and evidence based practice care to patients of all ages with complex, acute or chronic health conditions. To assess, diagnose, treat, prevent diseases, educate and advocate for all patients based on the standard of nursing and on evidence based practice. To treat my patients and their families with respect, dignity, and in the same way I would love to be treated. To treat all my patients equally despite of their skin colors, backgrounds, languages, ages, cultures, beliefs, values, or economic status. To help bring about positive social changes in the community, save lives, and impact the healthcare system positively.

My aim and philosophy are rooted in the Bible, Luke 10:25-37 which talks about the Parable of the Good Samaritan. And also in Florence Nightingale’s theory which states nursing is "the activity that promotes health which occurs in any caregiving situation and health is "not only to be well, but to be able to use well every power we have"(2016). I personally believe that health is wealth and power, therefore, my goal is to empower my patients and their families to achieve them.
