Independent Research

Independent Study in Hyperspectral Mapping and Geochemical Analysis of Multiple Eruptive Phases of the Blue Dragon Lava Flow, Craters of the Moon National Monument

For this independent study, basalt samples were taken from multiple locations in Craters of the Moon National Monument in order to analyze and track the multiple eruptive phases of the Blue Dragon lava flow in the lab setting. Samples in the lab were broken down using a jaw crusher and grinding mill, then baked into pellets to be analyzed at the University of Washington based on XRF classification. The XRF classification told us the basalts erupted from the same magma source based on the depleted geochemistry.

Independent Study in Remote Sensing Techniques of Multiple Locations in the Western United States

The goal of this independent study was to become familiar with remote sensing techniques and image classification. My mission was to interpret MASTER data on ENVI using different sections of the electromagnetic spectrum, in order to classify important geologic features on images, including their mineral content.
