Younicos is a global leader of intelligent energy storage and power grid solutions for utility, government infrastructure and micro-grid development, public and private renewable energy and storage integration. Younicos technology, commercial know-how and in-depth technical experience is recognized for the development of nearly 100 megawatts installed and more than 20 energy storage projects worldwide,

(USA, Germany, UK, Italy, Portugal). Mr. Mahan and his team were responsible for delivering the energy storage and management solution including project development of renewable energy (Solar and Wind) and grid infrastructure. Administration of the PPA,services contract with the regional utility, government (EU/Portugal) subsidy grant and support, government and regulatory approvals, EPC development with industry partners and suppliers, financial engineering with banks, private corporations and investors. Michael was fortunate to apply digital software and power experience (energy / battery) from both Good Technology and General Electric, leading Younicos as the Chief Development Officer, and President of the Development Company Business Unit. During his tenure at Younicos Mike and his team were responsible for implementing the group’s Energy Storage-as-a-Service (ESaaS) business strategy. Mr. Mahan’s extensive business development experience in the energy storage and enterprise software industry complimented leadership team members and partners providing the required enabled battery technologies and power electronics with highly intelligent software that automatically responds to the energy management requirements of both continental and micro-grids. Michael and his team are recognized for the Graciosa project establishing the world’s first Megawatt-scale power system based on up to 100 percent wind and solar energy. Graciosa – “the graceful one” – is the second-smallest Azorean island and has approximately 4,500 inhabitants. On this Portuguese island, working in close collaboration with the Azorean power utility (EDA) Younicos will demonstrate that renewables can be both technically and commercially superior to fossil fuels. By converting renewable energy with energy storage and management Graciosa is replacing ever more expensive Diesel generated electricity, which will lower the cost of energy. The resulting savings from the energy conversion will be shared between Portugal and external investors, who finance this transition. This does not take into account for the CO2-savings, which will thus essentially come for free. As on many islands of similar size, the share of renewables is limited to approximately 15 percent annually. No matter how many wind turbines or photovoltaic power plants are added to the grid, the lion’s share of the electricity supply has to be produced by Diesel generators. Battery innovation and integration of intelligent power controls combined with the Energy Management System (EMS) now enables the current grid to be independent of conventional generators, whose rotating mass now sets the pace. The new system combines integrated software with a 2.6 megawatt battery storage system, a 4.5 megawatt wind park and a 1 megawatt photovoltaic power plant. Aside from a cable linking the new wind park to the grid, new cables won’t need to be installed. The hybrid power system on Graciosa will optimize the energy from the sun and wind power. The Diesel generators will only be needed for back-up in weeks with very poor weather conditions. This results in an annual average of up to 65 percent of the island’s power demand
