PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

MEINHARDT, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 12/2014 – 01/2017

MEP Design Manager

Provided all design oversight for Border Guards Housing project, which included heating, ventilation, and air conditioning

(HVAC), plumbing, and fire protection design. Led team of nine direct reports and 12 indirect reports to ensure overall coordination of the research, design, planning, and production phases, developing realistic deliverables and timelines, determining and allocating resources, and communicating progress with stakeholders. Monitored field contract work to ensure compliance with project standards, procedures, specifications and codes. Utilized software and management systems to develop design drawings/calculations and create and track requests for information (RFI) and submittals.

Enforced and achieved tight completion and revised project schedule dictated by end user’s occupancy timeline requirements, requiring multiple design adjustments and constant resource re-allocation.

Successfully overcame project location challenges (uninhabited border area) requiring average rainfall data collection for storm drainage system design, incorporating power generation on each site with no power grid, and boring water wells and incorporating water/sewage treatment plants as water supply and sewage disposal systems were unavailable.

Drove efficient manpower and technical resource planning to complete MEP design ahead of schedule thereby saving 16% on design-engineering budget.

HOK ARCHITECT – O&A JOINT VENTURE, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 07/2011 – 12/2014 Head of Mechanical Engineering

Optimized team performance and led all construction management, site supervision, and mechanical design activities for nine direct reports and seven indirect reports on the installation and commissioning of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building management system (BMS) services on 80-floors commercial and residential high-rise building. Efforts included project estimating, preliminary scheduling, design development, quality control, and commissioning. Managed contractual requirements, design drawings, and project specifications, assessed and approved staffing and expenditures. Reviewed equipment, and material submittals and assessed contractor’s shop drawings and engineering calculations for design compliance. Coordinated with project manager to achieve project objectives, performed site inspections to determine compliance with construction documents, and resolved design issues during construction phase, ensuring successful project completion on time with zero change orders.

Efficiently directed the installation of LEED required mechanical and electrical systems and associated LEED Gold documentation for the first commercial and tallest high-rise building in the country.

Supervised, managed, and provided expertise integrating building hydronic system with district chilled water-cooling, the first in the country to utilize this concept.

Gray water system: Re-used collected waste-water from showers, lavatories, and kitchen sinks for flushing toilets, thereby conserving fresh cold water supply. Resolved associated odor by incorporating chemical water treatment system.

MELVIN COHEN & ASSOCIATES, Chicago, IL 10/2006 – 07/2011 Chief Mechanical Engineer

Administered design planning, cost development, scheduling, and management of HVAC and mechanical system design for multiple projects including schools, town halls and police 911 facilities, and multiple large-scale supermarkets. Directed activities to ensure that design, installation, and operational testing conformed to functional specifications, recognized applicable codes and standards, and customer requests. Developed and maintained productive working relationships with staff, business partners, designers, vendors, and owner representatives from project conception through completion. Designated agent for all LEED required documentation.

Performed boiler replacements, HVAC renovation, and BMS installation for 20 geographically dispersed schools, multiple conducted simultaneously, two of which were LEED-certified.

Average age of schools was 60 years, requiring laborious site surveys and efforts to locate as-built construction documents for mechanical and HVAC installation and to ascertain that services represented on documentation represented the existing as-built systems.

Identification of asbestos presence revealed in site survey necessitated abatement in existing mechanical installation, requiring project completion schedule adjustments, resource re-allocation, and project flexibility. PRIMERA ENGINEERS, Chicago, IL 10/2002 – 10/2006

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Applied management direction and served as project lead for three direct reports and four indirect reports to provide mechanical and HVAC building services design. Oversaw the HVAC and mechanical system design process on central utility and water treatment plants, a hospital, laboratory, theater, and college campus, ensuring compliance with all standards and guidelines. Developed mechanical specifications, prepared code review and design criteria documentation, and utilized engineering software to perform static pressure and pump head calculations for mechanical design drawings. Developed specifications and reviewed contractor and vendor equipment submittals. Collaborated with architect and owner to brainstorm systems, select best suited equipment, and maintain budget requirements as defined by project schedule.

Effectively installed district chilled water cooling, requiring extensive coordination as underground piping tunnels were used and shared by other utilities.

Fulfilled strict acoustic requirements in a theater project requiring sound transmission tests, incorporating buffer zones around the HVAC/mechanical equipment, piping, and ductwork, and duct shaft clearance stipulations.

Successfully integrated cogeneration on a college campus project utilizing waste heat from emergency power generators to supplement building heat produced by boilers. Additional work as Senior Project Engineer at A. Epstein and Sons Architect in Chicago, IL, for the HVAC and mechanical system design and project management on several office buildings, distribution center, and university convocation center.

Won the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Excellence Award for HVAC system design for successful application of innovative design in energy efficiency and indoor air quality. EDUCATION & CREDENTIALS
