Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.Professional and Clinical role within the Oncology Pharmacy Services

1.1Oversees the daily operations of the pharmacy and pharmaceutical services including but not limited to preparation and processing of chemotherapeutic medications and other prescription orders for primary and satellite in accordance with standard operational procedures, local and national guidelines and all legislation.

1.2Works with the director of pharmacy services to develop pharmacy policies and procedures to enhance work flow and accuracy of pharmacy procedures.

1.3Supervises the IV technicians and ensure that sterile compounding is compliant with current USP Chapter 797 and 800 requirements.

1.4Manages drug inventory control, which includes purchasing drug and compounding supplies, minimizing overstocking, and finding alternatives to items in short supply.

1.5Coordinates patient-specific in-office sterile compounding with scheduled in-office medication administration, approximating a just-in-time compound/delivery process to minimize drug wastage and delays in medication administration.

1.6For patients receiving oral oncolytics, the oncology pharmacist ensures that patients are contacted and asked about drug adherence, which includes obtaining doses-remaining counts and reminding patients of the importance of consistently taking medications as prescribed.

1.7Serves as a resource person for physicians, staff, pharmaceutical representatives, and management.

1.8Part of a research team as their pharmacist which involves receiving, storage, dispensing and record-keeping of investigational drugs.; reviews drug preparation, administration, stability and disposal.

1.9Coordinates with CCSI OSHA committee regarding handling of hazardous waste.

2.Oncology Pharmacy developments

2.1Co-ordinates and supports all clinical oncology pharmacy service developments

2.2Supports new clinical developments for chemotherapy and development processes and plans for all new electronic prescribing initiatives.

2.3Ensures all procedures are updated regularly in response to changes as a result of clinical project introduction and ensure they are in line with policy and legislation changes. Be responsible for supporting the training and informing staff of these changes.

3.Clinical staff education and training

3.1Ensures all relevant clinical staff are informed and trained in all aspects of oncology pharmacy services.

3.2 Attends relevant meetings, seminars, conferences and other opportunities to enhance knowledge and network with other professionals in the same specialty; encourages staff to do the same for continuing their education.

3.3 Supports the planning of programmes and participate in the education and training of other healthcare professionals, with reference to clinical aspects of the oncology pharmacy service and clinical information systems related to cancer services.

4. Additional Responsibilities

4.1 Takes part in clinical records, audit, DUR and pharmacoeconomic project work.

4.2 Responds appropriately to requests from pharmacy, medical and nursing staff for information and advice about CCSI oncology pharmacy developments.

4.4 Undertake any other duties as requested by the CCSI. Such other duties may be required from time to time and are consistent with the post.

4.5 Performs pharmacy technician duties.
