Course work/ Lab

n Three quarters of inorganic chemistry lab, Two quarters of organic chemistry lab: Recrystallization, fractional distillation, titration, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and gas chromatography. Three quarters of engineering physics lab.

n Chemical engineering lab:

o Polymers lab: 3-D printing, dynamic light scattering, membrane osmometry, and gel filtration chromatography.

o Colloids lab: Measurement of surface tension, adsorption, wetting and spreading, colloid properties, nanostructure, material characterization, electrokinetic phenomena, and rheology. o Chemical engineering lab II and I: Emphasis on teamwork, experimental planning, procedures, report writing, and oral presentations. Experiments on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. One-pot pretreatment of switch grass to be converted to glucose. Use of BioFlo CelliGen 115 benchtop bioreactor to optimize ethanol production via fermentation using fed-batch or batch reactor conditions. o ChemE controls/sensors lab: Install sensor on test apparatus, develop test plan to perform a measurement capability study. Develop models on Simulink using varying control methods, test on tank-pump apparatus for a given control objective.
