predictive modeling, forecasting, and analytic applications
I thrive on the challenge of defining needs and then developing applications that hit the bullseye. I am a self-starter who
works quickly and precisely. As a degreed Mechanical Engineer I have superior skill and experience breaking down
problems and designing and implementing solutions.
I am consistently praised for my written and verbal communication skills and am very comfortable delivering
presentations to groups of 2 to 2000, to audiences as diverse as the administrative staff to the CEO.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Brand Forecasting Laboratory, Inc. (BFL) - President/Owner - August 1997 to Present
Responsibilities
I formed Brand Forecasting Laboratory, Inc. (BFL) to further develop and license proprietary forecasting
technology I invented while serving as Johnson & Johnson's Director of Forecasting and Marketing Information,
and to develop custom Excel/VBA/SQL applications according to client needs.
My role has been to define the requirements around predictive modeling/forecasting/analytic challenges, develop
the math that solves the problem, and then codify the results into Excel/VBA solutions attached to SQL databases.
On two occasions I licensed my intellectual property to resellers (AC Nielsen and i2 Technologies) in deals that had
me become an employee in order to build a business around my software. During the term of these agreements I
collected royalties they paid to BFL on sales of my software.
Accomplishments
I have consistently delivered fast, light applications that are easy to use and bulletproof, which I then install, train
end-users, consult upon, and maintain.
My proprietary large-scale Consumer Goods forecasting application (financial forecasting coupled to supply-chain
forecasting) is currently in use on over 70 consumer brands.
Skills Used
Supply-chain and financial forecasting domain expertise in the manufacturer/retail industry combined with math
and statistical expertise - especially advanced multivariate regression techniques.
Heavy Excel/VBA/SQL expertise beginning with Excel 4 in 1993 and building upon that as Excel has evolved.
Relational database design, implementation, and queries for both transaction-oriented schemas and decision
support.
Johnson & Johnson - Director of Forecasting and Marketing Information - April 1990 to August 1997
Responsibilities
Responsible for all aspects of Financial and Supply-Chain forecasting as well as all analytic needs of the
Marketing/Brand Management operation.
Accomplishments
Not finding commercial forecasting solutions that met our needs I designed, coded, and implemented a large scale
forecasting solution (110 users) that cut our forecast error rate from 44% to 21%. The resulting reduction in
inventory requirements immediately freed up $24mm of cash and then saved the company $8mm annually while
improving customer service levels to a 97.5% Line Item Fill Rate.
Skills Used
Forecasting domain expertise, needs analysis, solution design, multivariate regression and other statistical
techniques, Excel/VBA/SQL coding.
EDUCATION - BS in Mechanical Engineering, 3.7 GPA - University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, MN - 1990
