Professional Experience
2000-2013 Fort Worth ISD, Fort Worth, Texas, Teacher
I have been at Bruce Shulkey Elementary for 5 years. The first two years I was a fourth grade Science and Social Studies teacher, and for the past three years I have been fifth grade Math and Science.
Prior to being at Bruce Shulkey, I was at George C. Clarke for 8 years. I was in a self contained 2nd grade classroom for one year and in Fifth grade for 7 years, 5 of those being only Math and Science.
Fellow Math and Science teachers have come to me for years to ask how to most effectively teach in the fields of Math and Science, especially with reluctant learners. I like to change up my methods depending on the needs of particular students. There IS a method that will work for every child, and I feel it is my job to find it.
In years past my students have had great results on the TAKS test, because in my classroom, we strive for excellence. If a student did not pass the test in fourth grade, we work from day one to pass in 5th grade. I have had many students that did not pass in fourth grade pass in fifth grade, and for that I am very proud of them.
I also was involved in starting the first REAL People Outdoor Learning Environment at George C. Clarke. It was very effective to motivate students to take responsibility for their designated area, and that in turn motivated them to take on more responsibilities, such as their own success in school.
1999-2007 Camp Earth Summer Program, Fort Worth, Texas
This was a fantastic summer camp that was an all day, one week long camp which was held at Lockheed Martin Recreational Facility. This camp was open to all children ages 7 - 13. The tuition for this camp was rather high, But Motorola sponsored 30 -50 on my students at George C. Clarke for 6 years. This was an experience that these children would not have access to without the scholarships, and I am proud to say that I procured the money from Motorola.
2007, 2009, 2011 Vital Link, Fort Worth ISD, Supervising Teacher
Vital Link is an internship program for incoming sixth graders. Two week sessions were held for two groups of kids to be a part of a variety of businesses to see how the business world works from the inside. The students learned how important a good education is for a successful life long career after they leave High School.
