Background Summary
Fourth-year doctoral student in Electrical Engineering with a strong computer-science background. Expertise includes audio signal processing in both music and speech.
Current Occupation:
Research Assistant, Audio Development Group,
Major Accomplishments
1989 to 1993: Network Administrator
System Administrator for multi-user computer running Unix (clio.sts.uiuc.edu). Duties include upgrading both hardware and software, as well as providing training in using the system.
Provide user-support for 30+ users, including PCs and Macs from which they connect over the Internet.
1990 to 1994: Broadcast Radio
Member of the Engineering and On-air staff at WPGU-FM.
Involved in trouble-shooting, fixing, and maintaining broadcast equipment, as well as setting up remote broadcasts.
Became Chief Studio Engineer in 1992.
Designed and built new digital production studio in Fall, 1994.
1991 to Present: Audio Signal Processing
Member of the CERL Sound Group.
Involved in research in an extended McAulay-Quatieri sinusoidal analysis/synthesis technique.
Wrote LemurEdit(TM), a graphical editing tool for analyses created by Lemur(TM), a tool implementing the technique above, on the Macintosh(TM). LemurEdit(TM) is used internationally and has been available on the Internet for 2 years.
Involved in real-time additive synthesis using an interface between LemurEdit(TM) and the Symbolic Sound Corporation's Capybara(TM) Signal Processor.
Co-author of Lemur Pro (soon to be released) merging both Lemur and LemurEdit.
1992 to 1993: Mainframe Computer Optimization and Implementation
Optimized floating-point divide microcode for the Zephyr, a quad-CPU 100 MHz ECL mainframe computer that has seen over 5 million user contact hours, and peak loads of over 1000 simultaneous users on the NovaNET computer network.
Floating-point divide optimization increased mainframe speed by 3 %.
Workshops and Seminars
1992 to Present: Intensive Workshop in Sound Computation
Organize and instruct the annual workshop together with other members of the CERL Sound Group. This ten day workshop provides instruction in digital sound synthesis, analysis, and computer music; it provides the participants with extensive experience implementing real-time signal processing algorithms. The participants include directors of electronic music studios as well as scientists interested in data sonification, from across the United States and Europe.
1991 to Present: Sound Computation Seminars (Spring and Fall Semesters)
Instruct this seminar together with members of the CERL Sound Group and other faculty members at the University of Illinois. This seminar covers diverse topics related to audio signal processing, including time-frequency techniques, parametric signal analysis, psychoacoustics, signal processing hardware, additive and functional synthesis, optimization, compositional methods, knowledge representation, interactive performance, design of control devices, and symbolic computation.
