2007-2008 Long-term Substitute/Paraprofessional/Title I Teacher

Completed a long-term substitute position in 1st grade; during which, I was responsible for creating daily lesson plans in accordance with the district curriculum and state standards. I was also a paraprofessional, in the same elementary school, for grades 2-5, assisting academically, socially and emotionally with both general education and special needs students. As a Title I Teacher, I worked on a daily basis with a small groupof struggling students in the area of reading. I created daily lesson plans and taught reading skills to, as well as instilled a love of reading within, my students before school.
2008-Present Language Arts Teacher ~ 7th and 8th Grade Corunna Public Schools
Currently teaching language arts in a middle school. Through this position, I am responsible for creating daily lesson plans in accordance with district curricula and state standards. On a daily basis, I have the pleasure of introducing the world of language arts to 180 students. Through various writing and reading lessons, after-school help, and social and emotional support, I encourage and enable my students to succeed at their highest ability. Not only have I co-taught inclusive language arts classes, I have also taught a specialized reading class, through which I saw the entire 7th grade class as students, general and special education students included, on a rotation schedule. Together, the students were introduced to the love of reading, and learned how to build upon an existing knowledge of reading skills, in order to adapt new ones; resulting in individual increased reading levels.

Why Try Program Certification ~ Trained and certified to provide hands-on solutions for violence prevention, drug and alcohol prevention, truancy reduction and increasing academic success among middle and high school students.Making Meaning Reading Program Certification ~ Trained and certified in the Making Meaning reading comprehension curriculum. This reading curriculum supports students’ reading, overall academic and social development. The program uses various fiction and non-fiction read-aloud books to teach core reading comprehension strategies. Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) Program ~ Trained in the DRA program. This program functions as a reading assessment tool. The individual student results provide me with the necessary information to identify specific needs.ACT Test Analysis and Preparation ~ Trained in analysis of the ACT. This analysis of the development, construction, administration and scoring of the ACT provided me with the necessary tools to aid my general education and special needs students in taking the ACT; ultimately helping them succeed to their best abilities in the future. AIMSWeb Written Expression Measurement Program ~ Trained in administering this monthly assessment. This assessment allows me to monitor individual student ability to communicate through written expression, thus addressing any needs and adjusting my curriculum to do so. Active Engagement and Vocabulary ~ Trained by Anita Archer in narrowing the “reading gap” that becomes prominent after grade 3. Explicit vocabulary instruction narrows this gap, and increases overall comprehension.Increasing Comprehension ~ Trained by Anita Archer in employing a variety of instructional strategies to scaffold comprehension for struggling readers.

Hobbies and Personal Interests
I love spending time with my two year-old son and husband; they are the light of my life. Together, we love to do anything outdoors, or take road trips to learn about the world around us. I also have a passion for anything that is “crafty,” including scrapbooking, photography, and making decorative cakes. On a daily basis, my son and I read lots of books together, and when we are not discovering the many wonderful authors in the world together, I enjoy doing so on my own. Between teaching and family, life truly is great!
