Dissertation Title: Pokes, Prods, and Pushes: Information Availability and Decision Making in
Ambiguous Environments

Summary:
My three essay dissertation investigates how changes in the availability of information impacts
decision making under considerable uncertainty. In these essays I investigate how the source, intensity,
novelty, and tenor of information influences decision makers in two contexts that are characterized by
considerable equivocality: entrepreneurship and healthcare. In the first essay I examine how changes in
media discussion of various IT industries can affect the willingness of venture capitalists to fund non-co-
located entrepreneurs. I next analyze how increases in media discourse, in both the broadcast media and
social media, impacts the willingness of entrepreneurs to start firms within the discussed industry. In the
final essay, I investigate how the change in the availability of novel information impacts the willingness of
physicians to abandon medical technologies. As the advent and growth of the internet, during the last
decade, has yielded a striking increase in both novel and non-novel information, the results of these three
essays have important theoretical and practical implications for managers and decision makers.
