Harnett Co. homeowners resume battle with local shooting rangePosted:

By Steve Sbraccia - email

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. -

Homeowners who live near a Harnett County shooting range are once again trying to get the faculty brought under local zoning ordinances so it can be regulated.

Several hundred showed up at a hearing Tuesday before the Harnett County Board of Adjustment.

A court ordered the board of adjustments to rehear the case, which could take several days to present.

The homeowners say Drake Landing shooting range should not be classified under the state's "Agritourism" label because that exempts it from local zoning. Residents who live near the facility say it needs regulation.

"There's semi-automatic fire where people are just burning ammo instead of target shooting," said homeowner Ted Martin. "We really don't feel this is a legitimate activity for an area that's as congested as this area is."

Martin lives about a mile from the facility. Others have complained about bullets from the shooting range striking their homes.

The owner of the facility has declined to comment up to this point.

By 11 p.m. Tuesday night, neither side finished presenting its case to the board of adjustment so the hearing will be continued Thursday night at 6:30.
