University of Virginia Fred was named CEO in July of 2000 and Chairman of the Board in July of 2004. His diverse employment history provides a broad base of experience.

He was employed with the City of Lynchburg as the Principal Engineer responsible for all design work performed by the City and contracted consultant services. He was previously employed by Babcock & Wilcox as the Task Engineer responsible for the structural analysis of the nuclear-powered steam supply components. Also, he was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation on the Graduate Engineer Training Program which included construction inspection, bridge design, and highway design.

In addition to his responsibilities with Wiley Wilson, Fred serves the community through a number of local and state organizations including:

Candid Time with FredFavorite outdoor activity?

My favorite outdoor activity is hiking. I have enjoyed hiking on three continents including hikes in the Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains; the Andes in Ecuador, South America; and the Alps in France.

Music you enjoy?

I enjoy a variety of music types including jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, rock-n-roll, and classical.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Augusta County, Virginia located in the southern part of the Shenandoah Valley. This area is primarily an agricultural area and both of my grandparents were farmers. Both of my parents were high school teachers.
