Verizon Data Services, Verizon Business

Systems Consultant, Software Engineering Colorado Springs, Colorado September 2005 – Present

Responsible for the creation of fully engineered projects in the IT infrastructure in response to detailed business requirements and funding. Within a highly restrictive security environment produced a solution to allow Windows Mobile devices access to internal resources. This solution consisted of highly managed antivirus, firewall, and handheld encryption software. In addition a custom remote handheld management tool was designed and developed that had each handheld check in on regular intervals utilizing custom web services. This handheld application would be able to download and upload software and files to the device, install and update new software, display messages to end users, and perform other specialized tasks. All this was deployed to the handheld by the end user with a custom software application that connected directly to the handheld and installed the required security software prior to the user being able to synchronize with corporate resources. The IM Horizons project implemented secure corporate branded Instant Messaging (IM) using the Microsoft Live Communications Server (LCS) 2005 platform. LCS provided encrypted internal IM and a gateway to the AOL, Yahoo, and MSN instant messenger networks. The IM platform was supplemented with the Symantec IM Manager gateway system, which acted as an antivirus and antispyware system for IM communications. All IM traffic was scanned for both malware and links to malware hosted on websites. Custom software and ASP.Net interactive websites were developed in support of this project. A Covergence SIP translation gateway was implemented to enable chat sessions between the LCS environment and the Verizon Core group Sametime chat service. Developed multiple directory management solutions that included management of Active Directory and other LDAP directories using a customized directory access framework.

Silvertide Software / Compassion International

Contract System Administrator Colorado Springs, Colorado March 2005 – September 2005

Worked with Compassion International project members to plan, document, test, and implement a Windows 2003 Server and Exchange 2003 Server upgrade. With over 35 domains in multiple forests spread throughout the world, and with extremely varied network conditions, very challenging issues arose in areas such as Active Directory replication and corruption, Exchange mail routing, and other legacy problems. These issues prevented successful upgrades and had to be corrected or repaired to allow successful migrations. The documentation had to be thorough enough that unskilled workers in third world environments could follow and complete the given tasks with a minimum of support. While an overall migration plan was developed, each individual migration had to be analyzed for its own unique set of challenges, and then a specific step by step system was planned and executed.

Everything from teamwork, to technical standards, to processes and procedures was reformed. Implemented procedures such as maintenance windows, capacity planning and control, disaster recovery planning, server build standards, workstation images, budget reduction, and SLA policies when dealing with customers. Brought together five technical resources to work as a capable team while striving to deliver top quality customer service. Managed and implemented such projects as an Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 migration, Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 migration, Windows NT Domain to Active Directory, Windows 2003 domain controller upgrades, SAN implementation, anti-spam email gateways, Systems Management Server implementation and management, Windows XP desktop rollout planning and implementation, Sungard (offsite recovery) and building to building disaster planning recovery, and a server reallocation project. Member of the bank's Computer Security Incident Response Team to respond to, contain, and document any security incidents. Installed Linux based fax and PDF printers to quickly increase productivity at no cost to the business. Used capacity planning strategies to ensure that future growth in critical areas, such as file storage space, email capacity, and workstation management, were able to be met without downtime or strain, all while under strict budgetary requirements. Worked extremely closely with the Information Security team to both ensure proper systems security and also help create and implement new security policies.
