Professional

Experience

Faculty of Engineering, Yamagata University

1999 -

Present

Associate ProfessorResponsible for research and education in

the field of signal processing for communication. Specific interest fields

include, but not limited to multimedia signal processing with emphasis on

speech and video processing, active sound control, data hiding, and multimedia

signal communications over IP networks.

Conversational Computing Corporation

1999

DeveloperResponsible for the development of robust

speech recognition front-ends for noisy environment. Also

responsible for developing Japanese speech recognition models for PC

applications.

Texas Instruments, Dallas,

TX

1995 - 1998

Member of Technical Staff

Responsible for the development of high performance phonetic

models in both English and Japanese, in both telephone and microphone channels.

Also responsible for improving Japanese digit models and for

developing applications using the Japanese models.Developed

phonetic models in both English and Japanese which reduced word errors to less

than half with improved context cluster tree and Gaussian mixtures. Models used

for successful multi-language speech recognition demos at a major

telecommunication equipment exposition (Telecom 95).Proposed

and evaluated a system, which enables control of Japanese World Wide Web pages

using speech recognition. Developed prototype using C and Perl on a UNIX

platform.

Texas Instruments Tsukuba Research Center,

Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan 1992 - 1995

ResearcherResponsible for the development of Japanese speech models for

both telephone and microphone channels. These included word-based digit models

as well as phonetic models. Also, participated in the

establishment of the speech research program in the new Tsukuba R & D

center.Proposed and prototyped a flexible

vocabulary Japanese speech recognition system which enabled arbitrary words to

be added to the vocabulary on the fly.Proposed

and evaluated an efficient inter-word phonetic context modeling method which

reduced the number of required phonetic models to less than one half with no

performance penalty.

Hitachi, Kokubunji,

Tokyo, Japan

1984 - 1992

ResearcherResponsible for the development of speech signal processing

systems for the telecommunication market. Also responsible

for video coding systems for the professional digital VCR market.Proposed and evaluated a speech packet coding/transmission system which

showed only modest degradation even at 30 % packet loss. Real-time prototype

developed using multiple DSPs, and transferred for productization.Designed

and implemented a speech coder prototype which decreased the bit rate from 64

to 8 kbits/sec maintaining toll-quality speech

quality with a single DSP, while meeting target delivery schedule to productization.Proposed

and evaluated a video coding method for digital VCRs which enabled trick-play

(jog, shuttle).
